Hi Guys,

I’m having a really frustrating issue on iOS 12.2, I’m not getting notified of new messages when they come in and they’re instantly marked as read, the messages app icon doesn’t get badges to say I’ve got a new message either. The only way I can see the message is if I go into messages.app and open the conversation thread which then shows the messages.

I’ve DFU’d my iPhone and iPad running iOS 12.2 but both are still having the issue, I’ve reported to Apple and they say they’re aware and working on it, no one else has access to my Apple ID and is only in use on my devices not shared with anyone.

Annoyingly because my bug report is a duplicate of someone else’s Apple wont communicate with me about the issue so I’m just left in the dark!

Has anyone else got this issue?

I had that issue, in the end I DFU restored back to iOS 12.1.4 and setup my phone as new.

Best thing I could’ve done, halved my apps from 100 down to 49 and things are generally working much better.

This issue is also present on current iOS versions. I have the same issue with one contact. The issue was resolved when I uncheck the read receipt but when I enable it again it happens from time to time. Don't want to DFU just for this.

Then my issue was similar but slightly different.

I never have read reciepts enabled. What was happening for me was I would receive the iMessage and it would just go into my inbox with no notification or badge at all. SMS would work perfectly however.

I tried deleting all the messages, disabling and re enabling iMessage and iCloud messages which would fix it for a little while but ultimately the bug would come back. I lived with the bug for a couple of weeks but it got too much to deal with, DFU and setup as new has fixed the issue for me but I admit is a bit of a nuclear option.

Thanks for the replies, glad to see its not just myself with the issue.

@Stuey3D - The apparent bug report that mine is a duplicate of is 47448416, interesting to see if thats yours?

I'm getting close to DFU'ing and setting up as new because its driving me up the wall, annoyingly its also randomly renaming HomeKit items in the Home.app as well after a reboot of the iPhone.... which is lovely when you've got 100+ things!

I wish I'd have not made the rookie mistake of not having an iTunes backup before going up to 12.2, I normally do but typically this time I didn't!

Not sure if that's mine as I no longer have the feedback app as i am back on public release software.

DFU and setup as new is a good call, worked wonders for me cleaned up a lot of rubbish and things are working much better all round.

Interestingly, while I was DFU'ing my iPhone last time because of this, whilst it was reloading iOS (Apple Logo and Progress bar) I had a message come in and exactly the same thing happened, almost as though its somehow being marked as read in iCloud before it gets to my devices

I deleted all of my messages prior to DFU anyway as part of my diagnostics before coming to the conclusion that DFU was needed.

Oddly even though I deleted all my messages it seemed that some still lingered in iCloud as when I setup as new and logged back into iCloud some messages that were a few days old were already in my inbox.
However tht didn’t cause an issue and notifications are working fine now thankfully.

I have been battling this issue for a long time. DFU sometimes briefly solved issue. Most recently I wiped device, deleted messages in iCloud, enabled iCloud keychain, then enabled iMessage. For whatever reason, this has restored badges and has worked for about a month so far.

As an aside, I have spent hours on the phone with Apple but they have never been able to suggest a solution that I had not already tried. The only thing that seems to have worked is as I mentioned above. No idea why activating iCloud Keychain should have mattered (and it may not have).

For me the issue is weird. When I "test" it with the contact I have this issue, I receive her messages when it comes and I'm notified, but if I don't open it after an hour or more, it will be mark as read sonner or later and the notification will disappear. Its really irritating and its the first time I have this problem in 9 years of iPhones I use and I changed nothing in my settings before this problem appears in january. And I'm not in the beta.

@Tassu1234 I've DFU'd both iPhone and iPad to iOS 12.1.4 and setup as new rather than restoring from backup and can confirm the issue has gone, so its either the beta or setting up as new thats fixed the issue.

Im leaving iOS 12.2 until general release so if it breaks again then we'll know for sure.

Appreciate you coming back and letting me know re beta 4 though.

Beta 5. Now I get notification on the screen and red dot in app, but no message sound in imessage.
