iOS 12.3.1 forced update IN A CAB on the way to the airport

What’s the deal? I have automatic updates on, but my phone is rarely plugged in overnight (for reasons). But I was downloading music for my flight this morning and I suddenly got the message that my phone was verifying an update. I’m not plugged in or connected to wifi, and my battery is at about 65%, and it just started updating right there.

It just barely finished in time, just as we rolled up to the airport, but it was stressing me out. Does this ever happen to anyone else? This is the first time I’ve ever seen something like this.

Why didn’t you turn auto update off?

The phone didn’t know you were “IN A CAB”. That feature is slated for iOS 17.

I got an update once on the can. Was shocked Apple would update while I was taking care of my business!

Why didn’t you turn auto update off?

It doesn’t do much good when the update is already happening. Like I said, it didn’t ask, it just started updating. And besides, automatic updates aren’t supposed to happen unless you’re plugged in and connected to wifi.

Actually, it kind of did. I already had to dismiss the thing where it thought I might be driving. So the phone was definitely aware that I was in a car.
