Maybe with GM and also with watchOS 5. But currently with pb4 and watchOS 4 it does not work (tested right now).

I don’t think that article is actually true. Even back at the iOS 11 keynote, it specifically said macOS and iOS. Apple Watch isn’t a true iCloud device like iOS and macOS devices. It doesn’t sync with iCloud, it syncs with your phone, which syncs with iCloud. There has never been anything to suggest that iCloud messages will work on Apple Watch. Only standard iMessage.

What is the difference between iMessage and iCloud message?

By the way, I remember have using my watch without the iPhone but connected to a WiFi and I received iMessages and WhatsApps.

iCloud iMessaging is using the iCloud technology to sync all of your iMessages across iDevices and Macs. As you send, receive and delete messages from one devices, the other devices stay in sync. Non-iCloud iMessaging means that as you send and receive they are in sync (but could be delayed if a device was sleeping or not connected to the internet), but as you delete iMessages, other devices will still have those messages.

Original poster was curious about if the Apple Watch messages would stay in sync.
