Hello,
I upgraded my Iphone to ios12 beta from 11.4.
Aftera while I wanted to go back to 11.4. I tried to update thru Itunes. It almost finishes but at the end my I phone restarts and a white screen appears with a black apple logo; It says "attempting data recovery". it goes to the end and fails. goes back "attempting data recovery".
I dont want to lose data I have on the phone. thats why I try to update rather than restore.

thanks in advance if someone helps.

There is no way to 'update' back to iOS 11. You can only restore back.

Unless you have an iOS 11 backup saved somewhere, you'll have to start fresh.

Unless you made a backup before you updated your phone there isn’t any way to “update” back to iOS 11 and keep your data.

I did the same thing, buddy. Unfortunately, I lost everything since I installed iOS 12. It was only 2 weeks, but it was still my fault.

Lesson learned. Always make a backup. And don't put beta software onto one's daily driver device if can't afford to run into issues, need to wipe the device to restore.

I shift updated back to 11.4 from the iOS 12 public beta and the only things I lost are my message conversations.

This is incorrect. I have successfully downgraded without data loss multiple times. You can do this as long as Apple is still signing the version you are moving to. To do this you must first obtain the appropriate ipsw for your device and then in iTunes hold (alt/option) and click 'Check for update' ... This will allow you to select an ipsw file. Let the update process normally and when it is done, DO NOT disconnect your iPhone from iTunes until it has fully booted and you can use it normally. If you unplug it early, it seems to move to "Attempting Data Recovery"

If your iTunes overrides the backup you had on iOS 11 you are stuck on 12 now. Go back to 12 and restore the backup if you want your data back.

If you have taken backup of your iOS 11 on iTunes, maybe you can restore it from backup files. Some important data may get lost, you should know that first.

Not looking to downgrade, but havent backed up to iCloud since iOS 11.4.1 so I if I did downgrade I should have no issues restoring to the iCloud back up right ?

Right. You can restore and then load your backup with iCloud.

Then you only Go back to 12 and restore the backup if you want your data back.

Please do not post false information. To downgrade to 11.4.1 without data loss follow this video, and you will be fine:
