Since upgrading to iOS 12, several weeks ago, my messages app will randomly start freaking out.

Symptoms:

- When looking at the list of convos with the "Messages" title, the list appears to be rapidly refreshing constantly. The avatar icons on the left flicker if they are singles. If they are group messages, they rapidly shift between showing 1 or 2 icons.

- If I compose a new message thread, I can't actually type in a name, because after typing a character, the field refreshes and clears my input.

- Possibly unrelated: my battery will randomly drop like a rock. iPhone 7, Battery health at 81%. Before iOS 12, it was always a gradual decline throughout the day. Now sometimes I can watch the meter drop in real time.

The only thing that resolves the messages glitch is to restart phone, but it comes back shortly.

How can I fix my messages app?

Get a new battery. You still have a month to take advantage of the $29 replacement at Apple.. Failing battery can cause all sorts of weird issues...

Thanks for the tip, I didn’t realize it was relatively cheap right now.

However I just don’t buy it as the cause. This started immediately after upgrading.

You might want to try and restore using iTunes to see if it clears it up. You could set it up as new and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn’t you can restore using your backup and return it to how it’s setup now.. Worth a try, it will confirm the software is or isn’t causing the problem.
