I experienced an issue with my iPhone SE newly updated to iOS 12 with trying to connect to my MacBook Air 2017, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

It would not recognize my device in iTunes (the newest one)

here's how to fix this

1. Reboot iPhone
2. Reboot laptop
3. Connect iPhone to laptop (ensure laptop has a working internet connection)
4. it should prompt you whether or not you want to install support software to support iOS 12 in iTunes
5. Click "install now"

You should be good.
I hope this was helpful
Was I the only one who had this issue?

No you were not. Same problem on a Mac. Had to remove and reinstall a new copy of iTunes to finally recognise the iPhone.
