Coming from a X, iOS 12 on the XS isn't nearly as fluid. I'm getting a lot of stuttering when closing apps and scrolling, specifically if I don't touch the display for 10 or so seconds and then swipe home. Is this anyone else's experience with the new phones?

Got the phone Monday. I don’t think it’s indexing anymore at this point.
No issues on my XS coming from my 8Plus. I’d recommend restoring and setting up as new. I have no lag or stutter at all.
Yeah I tried that. Tried 12.1 beta as well. May very well be an issue with my phone.
I would tend to agree. The fact that it’s persisiting on multiple versions of iOS and as a fresh install, something doesn’t seem right.
This was the main reason why I returned my Xs Max. My X is totally smooth so I just could not "upgrade" to a stuttering phone.
Me toooo .. i have a Xs max and it feels sluggish, stuttering .. maybe the new Phones to be optimised ..
Having the same problem and you can find many thread on macrumors with the same problem.
Tried everything, only apple can solve this with a software update. They focused a bit too much on the older devices with ios 12.

Yes, that stutter after about 10 seconds idle made reading news very annoying. Tried to read only from center of page and scroll more often to prevent stutter, did not work of course as it distracts too much from reading the article.

Mine was faster too but still stuttered.
Ahh.. these issues will be fixed in the next upcoming updates.. no reason to return the phone. These small issues will be fixed in the next update
To be fair, we shouldn't have to wait for an update to make Apple software run smoothly on a premium Apple device. It should be completely smooth from day one.
I wouldn't expect anything less TBH.
I have yet to set my XS Max up (coming from an X) and if mine is not smooth after a few days of use I will be returning mine too! I didn't pay this much for a stuttering device and having to wait an unknown length of time in the hope the next update will make it run as it should have from day one. Even then, an update wont guarantee a fix....
And IOS 12 should be performance update. In fact we all see IOS 12 is full of bugs just like it's still in beta. They fix one issue but make another. Remember when I updated From IOS 11.1.2 to 11.3.1 on my iPhone X and after unlocking phone you have to wait about 5 seconds for 3D touch to work. They fixed that in IOS 11.4 but it's not like it was before. I'm tired of this updates and testing and will stay on 11.4 which is optimized for iPhone X.
Here’s what’s interesting- I’m not sure if it only impacts some devices or if some people just don’t notice it, but I tried to file a bug report and was going to use screen record and it would not stutter. Makes me believe there’s an optimization issue. Also, I tried to replicate this problem of four different XS and XS Max phones and couldn’t.
I’m giving it until 12.1 beta 2 or 12.0.1 to see if this is resolved before I return my XS and stick with my X.

Tried to show the stuttering when screen recording is running in the background and it doesnt stutter anymore (not looking at the video of the screen recording)

Which is what makes me believe iOS 12 needs better optimization for the newer phones. There’s some kind of throttling going on in the background.
Crazy because my old 6s runs like new on iOS 12.
These stuttering that people are talking about are just small animation stutters where it drops from 60 FPS to 50 when opening an app. Which also only does it sometimes..
But yes.. all new things have bugs. That’s how software works.. iOS 12 had to be done by a certain day for them to be ready to go. They’ll release iOS 12.0.1 with bug fixes and improvements. This isn’t the first rodeo.. most of the time you have to look for bugs to see it. I didn’t even notice it until I started reading about in the forums.
