Has anyone noticed that when you try to send photos via iMessage to another iMessage user now it seems to default to sending them via an iCloud link if you send more than like 2 photos.

I know you can send a link of photos but I am not referring to that. I just want to send photos within iMessage like I have for years.

Is there a way to turn off the new method It’s doing?

i personally hate how I can't hit the camera icon in the message app and it brings up a little camera and my photos.... :-(

In beta 3 if you sent attachments via the photos "messages app" inside of messages it sent them separately, however if you shared from the messages app it would share via a link. I haven't tested it out in beta 4 yet but you might want to try that.

By the "messages app" I mean the widget you can use to attach photos from within the messages app itself.

I agree with the above...there was nothing wrong with the way photos were sent in iMessage. Revert to the previous method. The new ‘feature’ is annoying and not intuitive.

I noticed the same where ti creates an iCLoud link if I send 3 or more photos. Haven't figured out how to bypass or set it. This seems like a backwards step in design.

Is there a way to go back to pictures taken in iMessage not being saved to the device?

why does it feel like apple is becoming more and more like microsoft by making changes that no one seems to want, seems to serve no better purpose, and isn't intuitive nor customizable (i.e., allowing users to shut it off)? i can't stand that now when sending/receiving several imessage pictures, that i get a link instead of several separate pictures?!

microsoft, ermm, apple, ARE YOU LISTENING?

Or...you all (like me) are just so used to doing it the old way, you can't see why it is actually better to have the photos as an option in the tray versus combined with the camera icon.

I'm not saying it is right or better...just saying... ;)

Do you mean how accessing the photos and your camera are now 2 separate actions in iMessage?

YES! I can't stand this! A jailbreak would fit this, but why do we have to suffer. Give feedback to apple about this, takes 10 seconds, and the other way to get it FIXED! THIS IS AN EXTRA STEP and adds more time wasted then you are a power user.

How is it an extra step?

You used to hit the camera button and THEN the image button to get to photos.

Now you just hit the image app button and images pop right up.

Everyone’s complaint is only around the fact that it is “different” than it was before. Apple didn’t take away a feature. They actually made it easier to access quicker.

The only thing I don’t like is that photos sent through iMessage are saved in my photos.

About the iCloud link. Sure they could add an option but that then defeats the purpose. The most beneficial thing with the link is it saves data for both the sender and receiver and the link is transferred immediately.

I still sometimes hit the camera icon when I want to send a photo. But I also like the change. Pressing the camera brings up the full camera app. The photos button is still the mini photo library for quick selection.

It’s still an extra step as to get to photo Library there is one extra step if the Igor you want isn’t in the recent ones.

So...in that case, it’s no worse than before.

The fact is, you can easily remove message apps you don’t want, and there are way more people using them now that it is a possibility (bitmoji, gif’s, map info, etc.)

I hated it as well, but understand the change completely. It is one of the few that Apple has made that makes perfect sense and is logical above the previous option.

Again...being used to something doesn’t mean the new way isn’t better.

I disagree. Before, you could access photos even when the app drawer was closed. And, with camera and photos in the same place, you could easily choose to take a new pic or swipe through your recent photos and pick one to send. Now, the features are separate... and sending a photo involves opening the app drawer first (which is honestly just a waste of screen space if you leave it open all the time).

Only if you start typing your message first and then attach a picture.

Again...just my personal experience...I KNOW I’m sending a pic before I type a message typically. In that case, the app drawer is always opened for me to add it before I type a message (in the same message).

It’s only when I already start typing a message that the extra step of opening the app drawer and then opening the photos app would be needed.

I think this change is a case of the few people utilizing the app one way are complaining WAY more than the majority of the way people actually send messages, utilize iMessage apps, take photos/attach photos in iMessage, etc.

For me, I was always a “photo attacher” and not “photo taker” in iMessage. Part of the problem for me the old way that I think people are forgetting about is the pressing the photo option, while giving you access to photos, did NOT give you access to the full camera app. That was an extra step.

I’m sure Apple decided (correctly so IMHO) that people prefer to go into the full camera app the way they have it now so they can utilize all the new camera features such as portrait mode.

To me, that is probably the main reason the change was made; not to force people to use the app tray. I mean, do you really think Apple is trying to get you to use paid apps in the tray? What is the benefit to them? They added more app capabilities and need the tray to handle that.

The change is that it was simpler (even if by just a bit) to do it before. No need for a tray or anything of the sort, and photos could even be taken quickly within the messages app without the camera coming up to take over the screen. Some might not care about the changes, but it doesn't mean that the changes aren't there and that it wasn't simpler/quicker before without the need for anything extra (like drawers or anything like that).

That’s simply not true!

Before -

Camera, one press to open simplified camera, two presses to open full camera capabilities.

Photos, one press to open camera/photo tray and then another press to access recent photos.

Now -

Camera, one press to access full camera capabilities.

Photos, one press to access recent photos.

Tell me where I’m wrong...

As I recall recent photos were available right there as soon as you pressed the camera icon.

To get the full screen camera an extra press was needed, so for those who would want or need that as the primary action it would be an extra tap. That said, there was an option between a quick small camera that many found useful without the need of a full screen one and a full screen one if they needed it, while now there is no such thing.

Sorry...you may be right about that...and then another press to get into full photos. Like I said above, no worse/better than now.

Different where depending on what someone would usually use more often it can certainly be somewhat worse, while for others might not be much different (and maybe for some who would always want full screen camera it might be a bit better, at least when it comes to camera).

A good part of it is the app drawer that plenty of people don't use and this don't want to have on the screen, while might need to now just for photos, which makes it kind of a waste just to need a whole otherwise useless drawer (for those people) just for that one thing that didn't need it before.

Yes...that’s where the disconnect is with this.

Before, all we had was attaching/taking pics in iMessage.

But now I can do HUNDREDS of other things through iMessage. The fact that you (or even I) don’t use it to its full extent yet, doesn’t mean it is t needed and a good change.

I do now find myself using it for Animoji (just upgraded to an XsMax from a 7+), using the GIF apps more now, sending songs with iTunes button, etc.

Old habits die hard...that’s all this is...not bad design or adding stuff that isn’t needed.

Correct! And I’m in the automotive business and when your repeatedly sending photos all day for hours a day a change like this drives you nuts. Probably adds an extra hour a day. My phone also has 20,000 photos in it :)
