I think the most annoying iOS 11 multitasking behavior is how the slide over behavior works when combined with non-multitasking capable apps... especially when “returning” to an app. For ease of comprehension let me explain what just happened to me (and I’ve had countless other examples of this over the past year).

1) the most recent slide over app was safari (From last night when I was doing some minor safari searches over a YouTube video)
2) Today (over 12 hours later), I’m browsing safari in full screen mode and click on an amazon link
3) This bumps me out of safari into the full screen amazon app
4) I finish looking at the product and attempt to return to safari (either by clicking top left area, cmd+tab, 4 finger swipe)
5) The little slide-over safari pops up (since it’s still retained in that mode from yesterday)
6) Grrr.. kind of annoying but let me just pull on the grabber to make it a side by side app which I can just pull accross to full screen.... oh wait amazon doesn’t allow side by side apps... ok lemme click on safari from the quick access dock area... hmmm... just brings the same slide over... uhhh uhh... why is life so hard??
7) brain explodes

Note: the same thing happens when clicking on a notification from an app that’s saved in slide over mode.

Now I know the “solution” is to simply go “home” and then reopen safari, but it’s such a frustrating experience. I don’t know if the answer is to require all apps have multitasking ability (obviously not tenable for games) or the slimplest thing would be just to encorporate a gesture on the grabby bar (either double tap or long hold) to full screen the app.

There is already a gesture to switch a slide over window to a side by side window. Just pull down and let go. Then you can drag the split screen slide either way to adjust the ratio, or go full screen with either app.

Tomorrow is WWDC, where Apple will talk about iOS 12. Let's see what they say...

Do me a favor. Try doing that on Amazon, facebook, or any other of the many popular apps which don’t encorporate the side-by-side view. Then get back to me.

Naturally you can’t work split screen with apps that don’t support it.

That’s my point. There are a lot of popular apps which don’t utilize split screen apps. And when you evoke some action to return to an app (which was the last app to use slide over) it will pull up the slide over app even if you haven’t used that in slide over mode for days and have frequently been using it is full screen mode. That provides a frustrating experience, especially when the app you’re in doesn’t support split view.

That leads me to another thought. Not only should you be able to easily “full screen” a slide over app, but I think that any time you have viewed a slide over app in full screen, it removes it from the slide over save state.

I know I would not want that. Maybe iOS 12 will refine app behavior. Let’s see tomorrow.
This is what I’m hoping for. Last year was big for the iPad. They just need some small refinements for multitasking this year, along with a few other things like a more full-fledged Files app.
