I have a small, select group of apps that I reluctantly allow to use my location "always." That may be unpopular here.

Throughout the iOS 13 beta and the iOS 13 GM, I have been bombarded by Apple to change my location settings through pop-ups. However, at select times, it will ask me to change my "always allow" to one of two options: "while using" and "never."

This forces me to pick one at random. Then go to settings and change back to "always allow."

Anyone experiencing this issue? I love the emphasis on privacy and awareness, but not letting me turn off the pop-ups, or have an option in the pop-ups for "always allow" is frustrating. Sometimes it does give me the opportunity to select "always allow" in the pop-up; however, those instances are few and far between.

I can only see three options under location settings for any app: Never, Ask next time, or While using the app. I don't see an option of always allow. I remember reading somewhere that Apple has eliminated the "always allow" option in iOS 13.

Very odd... Are you on iOS 13.1? I downgraded to iOS 13 and have four options (in the settings app). When I get a pop-up, I am forced to choose either never or while using app.

Going to do more research later... At least they are forcing privacy I guess... rather than the alternative.

No, I am on iOS 13. See attached picture for what I see as the location option for the weather app. Other app looks the same.

After further investigation, it appears that Apple developed apps have 3 options.... 3rd party apps have 4. Correct me if I am wrong though.

Interesting finding. I just checked all apps on my phone. Not all third party apps have four options. For example, Facebook or Lyft both have four options but Twitter only has three. Most Apple apps have three but Siri & Dictation is an exception. It only has two.

In iOS 13, when an app requests the "Always" location permission, the system shows a prompt that only has the While In Use or Don't Allow options. If the user selects When In Use, the app gets "provisional" permission to access your location in the background. As soon as the app actually attempts to access your location from the background, you get the second prompt, which has the Always Allow button. If you select Always Allow, then the app will get permanent permission for background location access.

I've set a few apps to have location services "always on". Even so, I get pop-ups nearly every day for these apps asking me to re-confirm that I want them set to "always on". I'd have thought that once I'd set this for the app then it would accept it permanently but I'm still being asked all the time. This happens on both my iPhone and iPad running iOS 13.

Is it a bug, or just Apple assuming that I'm incapable of making the right choice?

I also have this concern.

I use my iPhone as a GPS while on my motorcycle...the pop-up will come on while riding requiring me to stop to remove the alert.

I am wondering if it resets each time an app is updated.

I just want to set it once and leave it.

This pop-ups keep showing even though I select Always Allow every single time. I have like 3 or 4 per day, does anyone know how to stop them? I don't ****ing care if my apps are tracking me.

Same here, Google maps, Hue and a few others - I need to confirm "Always" at least once a week. Looks like a bug to me. Where would one report such?

Does iOS 13 'learn' usage pattern over time? It seems like I was getting alerts for newly installed apps, but I am no longer getting them now after selecting Always a couple of times in the alerts. I definitely don't get them very often and I have a number of apps set to Always.

I know Siri Shortcut Suggestions is using 'learned' data including location, time of phone pickup and such as it suggests my driving tracking app every morning at just the right time.

So every couple of days I get a pop up to give permissions to apps wanting to use location services. This happens for a bunch of apps, and it just keeps re-asking every couple of days regardless of choosing “always allow”.

is this a bug? It gets really annoying having to do it over and over.

it’s happening on phone and iPad.F772492B-729C-4442-80B5-B1E094976E42.png

Yes, I use Google Maps and Citymapper a lot and I get at least two of those per day. It's super annoying. Apple should do something, there should be a "it's my ****ing problem if apps track me, just stop telling me about it all the time" toggle switch.

Weird, I have yet to see this pop-up. Does that mean none of my apps are using my location in the background?

It's a bug. If the permission is set to always, it shouldn't continue to ask at least once a week. But that's what happens.

agreed. I’ll submit a bug report! I was worried it was isolated just to my install but it seems at least semi common.

edit:
Ugh. Yeah sure run into a lot of broken trying to use Apple these days.

I use google maps and never get this pop up at all.
