I think it’s widely accepted that Mail in iOS13 is a buggy disaster. There have been many threads about this. I thought I would start a thread to allow people to post problems they encounter all in one place. Apple, please fix this app! I have noticed:

1) old emails reappearing and then being unable to delete
2) new emails appearing at the bottom the inbox
3) needing to drag down on inbox to have new emails appear
4) badge counts incorrect
5) emails not being marked as read
6) difficulty opening attachments
7) when forwarding a message the original message gets cut off

This is just a start! i have tried all the traditional fixes with no luck.

Alright apparently Apple has again invoked me to organize the trolling effort to fix another glaring problem.

Where to start:

1. Daily, or multi-daily feedback - everytime your email doesnt work you send some feedback. Add it to your bookmarks on your phone. https://www.apple.com/feedback/

2. Email problem eh? Time to email tim everytime it happens: tcook@apple.com

Also recommend sending this as a tip to:

Make sure when you send this to youtubers/bloggers that you include links to multiple users having issues.

Time to fire up the ********ing cannons.

This is a great idea - I have been tracking Exchange (EAS) / native Mail on iOS 13.x and so far have compiled the following table below.

Have found some workarounds via online searching and self troubleshooting.

Would be great if anyone can suggest any other workarounds or inside information on bug fixes in future releases.

If anyone works in the field of MDM / EMM - would even be more appreciative if you can share any insights or odd behaviors with Mail in iOS 13.x 😁

IssueBehaviorResolution \ WorkaroundStatus
Calendar Invite Not ResponsiveUsers may observe that tapping on calendar invitations/updates in the native Mail app does nothing. The attachment may say "Unavailable" under the filename. At this time the cause of the issue is unknown, however it appears to only occur on iOS 13.0 - 13.1 devices.

Users can work around the issue by accepting EAS calendar invitations/updates in the Calendar app rather than the native Mail app.
Fixed in iOS 13.2 Beta 2?
If you see the Hello screen repeatedly after updating to iOS 13If, after you update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 13, you can't use your iOS device because it repeatedly sends you back to the Hello screen, looping continuosly.Remove the SIM card from your device.
Press and hold either the Home button—if your device has one—or the Side button, until a menu appears from the bottom of the screen.
Tap More Wi-Fi Settings.
Tap the Info button to the right of the Wi-Fi network that your device is connected to.
Tap Forget this network, then tap Forget.
Follow the steps to start using your device.
When you're finished with the steps above, rejoin your Wi-Fi network:

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
Tap the network you want to join and enter the password, if required.
Slight delay in correlation between Push notification and Inbox loading in native MailiOS 13.1 devices receive a notification when a message arrives, (push on and apparently working) , but when they want to read the message when launching the Inbox via Mail, it has to be downloaded first. On 13.0 or lower devices they have the message already downloaded. (as it should be) - therefore, there is a slight delay. This does not occur on all devices and appears to be intermittentNone at this stage.Fixed in iOS 13.2 beta 3?
Unable to save Drafts in native Mail appUsers are not able to save emails to their Drafts folder. Either the Drafts folder is not visible or saving emails results to nothing.First, if the device has multiple email sync accounts enabled (GMAIL, etc), please go to Settings> Mail> Default Account and ensure the corporate EAS account is selected. Then follow these steps:

• Open the Photo app
• Select any photo
• Tap the small icon on bottom left corner that forwards your photo to another app
• Select the Mail app to attach the photo to a new email
• Do not send the email, just tap on Cancel instead
• The prompt will come up, tap on Save Draft
• Then kill the Mail app
• Re-launch the Mail app
• Draft folder should be there and saving them should be operational again.

This should be a once off process - even after a power cycle, the workaround fixes the bug permanently.
Opening mime-attachments in MailUsers are not able to open email attachments in Mail. Instead, they are prompted to forwarded the attachment into another appNone at this stageFixed in iOS 13.2 beta 2?
Duplicate Sent Items EntriesUser sends an email from their iOS 13 device. The email then appears in duplicate entries in their native Mail iOS 13 Sent folder.Read one of the duplicate entries and upon going back to the Sent folder, only a single entry is visible.
Inbox does not load new emailsEmails do not load into the inbox for an extended amount of timeUser must kill Mail app and then re-launch it
Sensitivity of Emails are not keptWhen replying to an email with Sensitivity status marked, the replied email does not retain's its status. The email is reverted back to "Normal"None at this stageFixed in iOS 13.2 beta 3?
Search in Mail not working correctlySearching for Email by Sender does not return results or only returns partial results. When typing the name of the sender in the search box, Under people, don’t select the Sender but rather the option below that that offers “Sender contains:xxxx”
No notification or badge when a new email arrivesEmails are downloaded into the inbox but there are no push notifications or badges displayed on the locked screen.None at this stage. Fixed in iOS 13.2 beta 3?
Email does not contain original text when forwarding or replying itEmails are truncated when they are forwarded or replied to.None at this stage.
Deletion of Email re-appearsWhen deleting an email on the device, the message re-appears. Only upon the second deletion of the email, the deletion is properly actionedDelete the email again upon re-appearing

Yes, and lots of threads lots of other core native apps that have been completely f****d up in 13. It takes less than 10 seconds to scan the topic lines of the first page of the iOS 13 forum to see how badly and how broadly 13 has been f****d with by Apple. Not just Mail, but Notes and Safari and others. It's hardly even worth replying to questions asking "what problem are you having?" at this point. Just look around for a moment and see.

Yeah... The entirety of this release has demonstrated just how bad Apple's software has become. There was actually a time when a major update had a few bugs here and there and were fixed in the first update a couple weeks later (e.g. 13.0.0 > 13.1.0). Yet Apple's done a bunch of rapid releases and it's still a mess. They keep focusing on introducing new features (Deep Fusion) without even bothering to fix the basics. Now they've started bricking devices. It's bad enough the HomePod is an over-priced speaker (you know, since Siri sucks), but now Apple's made some of them paperweights.

And before people start telling me, "You can't add new features without modifying the existing code." Yeah, I get it; I've done software development for a good portion of my life. The problem is you don't release something this broken. I pity the programmers working on this, it must kill them to know the software is so broken but then be told by an executive to push it to production anyway.

I'm sticking with iOS 12 on my devices.

Apple have only separated 14 apps out for special treatment. Mail isn't one of them, so you're correct to log it as an iPhone bug.

It's almost as if Apple *wants* Mail to be the train wreck that it currently is. I don't actually believe that, but it's hard to see how they mangled it all through the pre-release betas, released it in a mangled state, and have continued not to fix it through four subsequent updates. It completely defies belief, at least my belief.

I‘ve noticed a couple of times now that when launching the mail app it shows no mail at all. Then if I leave it a minute it reloads all of my mail boxes.

I wonder if Apple could just resort to giving us the version of mail package from iOS 12? In all the years I have used mail it has never been this bad.

So the final public version of 13.3 is released today and so far, my testing with Mail and Exchange has been good.

- Have been unable to reproduce duplicate Sent Items

- Mail no longer crashes with hold press and forward

- Content of email is no longer truncated or cut-off when forward or replied

- Used to get random attachment errors when forwarding, but have been unable to reproduce thus far

However, the issue where we receive a new email badge notification (eg, when device is locked) - and we then go to unlock and load the inbox - the mails are not there (or takes some time downloading) - is still prevalent. I'm assuming this will not be resolved for some time.....

Keen to know what others think (in due time of course)?

Agree with all of this, including the remaining issue. I know there is a lot of frustration with the Mail app (I share this) but it is at least getting better. If the remaining issue referenced in this post is resolved, I will be satisfied.

Hopefully I'm in the right thread. Don't flame me here, but is else anyone else having an issue with Mail not automatically fetching/pushing new mail? I've always had my Mail app set up to automatically fetch/push new mail. Now I have to open the app for it to fetch mail. I recall seeing someone else here mentioning this as well ... is this just one of the multitude of issues with Mail?? Can't believe this is still happening - we just had an update!

According to folks here you should just learn to live with it because mail isn’t critical. If you don’t like it you should go to another platform instead of asking Apple to fix what worked fine in previous versions of iOS.

I get delayed mail notifications. Sometimes I get no mail notifications until I open the Mail app and the new emails appear. I have Spark downloaded as well and I get mail notifications from it way before the Mail app pushes a notification for the same email through. Sometimes the emails are in different order and the Mail app eventually sorts them correctly.

iOS 13 is a mess.

yup the native mail app is messed up alright. It spent hours doing something in the background last night while I was asleep. When I woke up this morning there were just 3 new mails. Who knows what it’s up to. It’s been churning in the background during work hours too. No wonder my battery life was shot today.

Yup I am back on Outlook. I have always beta tested for them (and a few other mail apps) but was using Mail primarily for a while now as it was just working and had dark mode out of the gate since WWDC. It was/is also doing a better job of threading than 3rd party apps getting similar emails together in 1 thread versus separate.

But Mail is such a cluster still that it is becoming unusable with weird glitches that arent getting better over updates. Double sent showing for outlook/exchange accounts, notification center notifications disappearing, email signatures not switching from changing the "from" account, etc. Basic basic functionality of a mail app- display mail, notifications, and mail signatures. And common bugs everyone is seeing, not some weird glitches that take 5 steps to reproduce.

That is beyond delay loading the emails when going into the app, which is an inconvenience, but all apps seem to struggle with this so I wont make a huge deal over that. A minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of the app working properly.

And yes, like other I have left feedback in the app and most of it is still open since before iOS13 release; with many others reporting the same (the Feedback app just says 10 or more seeing the same) Almost like Apple just doesnt care to fix it. All of those mentioned above have 10+ people seeing it, so Im not the only one seeing those specific bugs (and seeing it around here too)

Not going to keep banging my head against the wall, just use Outlook for now I guess until/if Mail gets fixed.

I'm sticking with iOS 12 on my devices.

Tomorrow my 11PM goes in its box after I get my new/old XS Max, just like the one I traded to Apple. Happily, I archived an encrypted backup half an hour before I handed the phone to Apple, so I have a good 12.4.1 backup to restore. I'll have my old phone back again. G-d it's hard not being able to trust a phone with your work emails. (It is failing to download corporate emails again today.)

Just want to add my name to the list. ios 13 Mail is truly a disaster. Here are just a few of my issues:

1) Multiple refreshes needed to have mail appear even after receiving a new mail notification.
2) Needing to delete the same email several times for it to disappear.
2a) When going through new emails and I hit "delete", the same email appears again and I need to delete it again. If I'm going through all my new emails one by one and am deleting most of them as I go I need to delete each one of them twice or more.
3) Mail showing up in "unread" folder but not in the actual folder.
4) Unread folder showing a number of messages in the folder list, but no actual messages in the folder.
5) Many many other bugs, glitches, and annoyances that were not present in previous ios. Hopefully they are fixing this all for the next update.

I suppose this is borderline funny, or maybe tragicomical. My 11 Pro Max, currently on 13.2, has had every manner of problem with Mail (and several other of the native apps, but Mail is a mission-critical task for this phone). It got so bad that I bought a used XS Max that still had 12.4.1 installed.

Possibly proving how incredibly inconsistent 13.x has been for me and many others, the 11 Pro Max is now downloading and alerting on Exchange emails exactly like the XS Max on 12.4.1 does. I don't know whether it got smarter from sitting next to the XS Max, or got scared that it was going to be sold, or what. ;) I'll be watching the two of them for a while. Nutty. What gives with 13? :(

Funny but my son, who has the 11 ProMax also said this morning his mail was working properly. Makes me wonder whether there is some ActiveSync issue with Microsoft servers and IOS 13. Or it is totally temporary and will stop working very soon.

While this may not be of much use to anyone - I have been testing iOS 13.3 beta 2 (with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account) vigorously and it is looking promising.

I am no longer able to reproduce the following popular issues:

- Duplicate Sent Items seems to have been addressed

- Long press / hold and and Forward - no longer crashes Mail app

- A good one - that frustrating bug where email body content is cut, removed or truncated when forwarding - "seems" to be resolved. I can not replicate it anymore.

- Garbled characters randomly appear in the body of email "seems" to be addressed.

I really hope the final release of iOS 13.3 is a solid one for the native Mail app (and we can carry on with our lives 😁 ).

Mail still broken for me; I receive a notification for new mail but still have to refresh for it to download. Given this has happened since the release of iOS 13, why aren’t Apple able to fix it.....?
