My iPad pro automatically updated to iOS 14.1 overnight, which is odd because I had updates disabled and it was still on an earlier iOS 13. Now when I try to turn it on, I get the Hello/Hola/etc screens and it asks for a passcode. I bought this iPad new and it has never been set up with a passcode and so I don't have one. Before the update, I would just press the home button a second time and it would work. Now, the iPad is completely unusable. I can't get past the Hello/Hola screen. TouchID was also never set up on this iPad.

The Apple support forum seems to indicate a lot of people who never set passcodes have this problem with 14.1, but there are no solutions.

It's a 2017 model Ipad Pro 10.5". Any ideas how I can get into it?

I had the same issue when my step mums updated. I had to reset from iTunes and then restore using an iCloud backup.

Thanks. I guess I have no choice then. I don't have a backup, but I don't have anything inportant on the iPad so a factory restore isn't a huge deal just a nuisance to get it connected to a Mac.

I believe when this happens you can just enter any passcode, then it prompts you to enter it again and it sets that as the passcode. You can then remove it in settings. Not sure what triggers this to happened but happened to me before.

It would be a good idea to create a passcode. If your iPad is ever lost or stolen, it will help prevent someone from readily accessing information that is not for their eyes.

In this case, it's just being used as a toy for my kids to play with. Other than games and a long browser history of youtube kids videos, there's nothing on the iPad. The kids are still too young to enter a passcode, but they can get in and get into youtube or their games on their own.
