Now that Apple seems to see the desire for always on display options on the Apple Watch, anyone think the iPhone 12 and iOS 14 will finally offer it? OLED screens are perfect for it.

Maybe, though people aren’t really clamoring for it the way they were for the Apple Watch. After all, watches have almost always been “always on” in the past, so people really wanted that functionality back.

The watch is out in the open on your wrist all the time. The iPhone is in pockets / purses when not in use.

Only use I can imagine is when using it on a night stand or a stand on your desk. That is pretty narrow use case, so I don’t think it is coming.

Maybe they'll include it when the proximity sensor isn't sensing anything, meaning the iPhone is out in the open. Would be a clever, Apple-like move.

I'd like to see this, but with "complications", like on the Watch. Weather, calendar updates, stocks, etc... Have them move around to avoid burn in (which is possible with OLED screens)

That is really the only scenario I could see making "always on display" a useful move. As others have said...it's purpose on the watch...I totally get it. On a phone that spends a lot of time in your pocket...not so much. Proximity sensing would definitely make more sense.

One reason always-on can work for Watch is that it can remain unlocked for as long as it remains on the users wrist. Apple can't make the same assumption about an iPhone or iPad left "out in the open."

I want and expect my phone to lock when it's unattended. All the lock screen is good for is date and time, and optionally, notifications. I don't need always-on for that. It wouldn't hurt to have it, it's just not a compelling feature. For that matter, I don't see Always On for Watch to be all that compelling - I nearly always move my arm to look at my Watch, so it's nearly always awake when I need to view it.

There are others who would rather live life without a lock screen (Auto-Lock: Never). For them, a power-efficient always-on could be an improvement.

Always-on would be good for many of the same thing that complications on Apple Watch are used for. Weather, next appointment, sports scores, etc. Being able to designate widgets to appear on the lock screen when “always on” would be nice.

Not sure if I’m the only one, but AOD gets confusing sometimes and counterintuitive (for me at least). With my S5 Watch, thinking the display is active when it’s in low power state and getting confused as to why I can’t swipe down to see notifications (apparently Rene Ritchie has the same issue he mentioned in a YouTube video). Same went for when I had the Galaxy Note8. Thought I was on the lock screen plenty of times trying to unlock the phone when it was just in AOD mode and wondering why I couldn’t interact with the phone. Should be a clear distinction between the two. Felt like the Note8 AOD and lock screen were way too similar.

That said, it would still be nice to have the option. Would love to see Apple’s implementation of it on the iPhone. I think the Watch should let you wake it when it’s being swiped though.
