I’m not sure if this is the place to ask, but is it possible or recommended to install iOS 14 beta if my backups are only done on iCloud? I tried to do an encrypted backup on iTunes using Mojave, yet I get multiple prompts saying that my Mac doesn’t have free space available despite having 70 gigs left.

I normally use iTunes backups only if I plan on archiving one backup, just in case. I have participated in the beta program since 2016.

No issues at all, main thing is that you have a pc or mac, in case you want to downgrade back to iOS 13.

know plenty of people who use iCloud only, that have installed iOS 14

Well the only issue is if your backup is iCloud only, you won't be able to downgrade and restore your backup completely if your phone continues to backup after installing the beta, since it will be an iOS 14 backup now

iCloud will still have a iOS 13 backup available.

Don't think so. My iCloud backup only shows one backup for each of my three devices. And the two that were upgraded to Beta iOS 14 only show the iOS 14 backups - they no longer show the iOS 13 backup.

strange, iCloud should show most of your backups. Unless it thinks since you’re on iOS 14, you don’t need the iOS 13 backup anymore.

iCloud only has one copy of your backup and that copy only. Once there is any successful attempt to iCloud backup your device while running iOS 14 beta, you can no longer roll back.

To OP, maybe try to move the iTunes library and iOS device backup to a different folder using symlinks. There are tutorials online telling what to do.

What I've done in the past is to just turn off iCloud backups when I start trying the betas.

I then leave iCloud Backup off until I'm reasonably satisfied about the beta's stability. This usually takes a few weeks once I get on the beta train.

Then I switch it back on again.

Therefore I can try the beta without risking not being able to go back if there's any showstopper bugs. Sure, I won't have a current backup during that time, but my most important data is backed up separately (iCloud photos, messages, etc.) anyway.

As the post above me states, just turn off iCloud backup as soon as you upgrade to 14. This will keep your most recent iOS 13 backup.

Additionally, iCloud can in fact keep more than one backup of each device. For example, I have an iPhone and iPad that do daily backups. Whenever I need to restore a backup it shows those two devices’ most recent backups first. Below those is a line that says “Show more backups.” Usually there is an additional 1 to 3 backups of whichever device I’m needing to restore.

Why not do what Apple actually suggests. Make a iTunes backup and archive it. Then leave iCloud backups on. So you’ll have a good ios13 backup and icloud backups on beta.

Because the OP clearly stated not having the space to do so. S/he was inquiring exclusively about iCloud backup options.
Anecdotally, I found restoring from an archived backup to be incomplete. I still had to download some things and change some settings. This is compared to restoring from an iCloud backup, where everything was in its place.

I recommend you to backup your iPhone/iPad using a computer, not iCloud. I had a problem with my iPhone, so I had to restore it and when I tried to install my iCloud backup I couldn't. My backup had 0kb, and I lost all my data. I‘m not sure if that's a beta issue, but I recommend you to backup using a computer, just in case.

I am on 14 beta with my 11 pro, getting a SE. I have a back up of latest 13 on my iMac but its a 256gb with 130gb used of photos/videos downloaded on phone. My iCloud back up only has 22gb used as i turned off download photos/video to optimised since going to 14. Going to a SE 64gb should i set up as new then install 14 again then back up from iCloud backup?
Or revert the current 11 pro back to iOS 13 with back up on my iMac, then turn off the photo download then back up again, then restore/setup the SE from that back up?
