My iPad mini 4 was previously running 15.4 with no issues, never been repaired, never had any issues. I fully charged the iPad, closed all apps and downloaded and installed the 15.5 update. When it finished I left it on my desk for a few days without using it (since I mostly use the mini 6 now). When I finally picked it up, I noticed the battery was down to 54%, fine since it had been sitting for a while, but the touch screen was not responsive.

It was asking for the password after the update, but the screen would not do anything. I tried the power button (off/on) still unresponsive. I held down the power button to restart it and the swipe to power off came up, but again the screen wouldn't respond. So, I held down the Power and Home buttons to force restart. The apple logo came up and it began to restart.

I set it down and took a phone call. About 5-10 min later I picked it up and almost burned my fingers. The back was incredibly hot, so much so I thought it was going to burst into flames. When I pressed the power button a temperature icon and overheat warning was on the screen. I didn't know what to do so I put an ice pack on the backside to get it to cool down. After about 5-10 min it began to cool. When I pressed the power button it showed the Plug in to Charge icon with a red battery. I did this and it began to get hot again. So I unplugged it and cooled it down again. After about 20 min it was finally back to normal temperature, but completely unresponsive. The next day I tried to charge it and plug into my MacBook with no response. It is completely dead now.

So, I know that it is out of warranty, but this kind of thing is not normal from a iOS update. It had been working just fine for a long time before running this update. Not sure what happened, but thought I'd share and hopefully prevent it from happening to someone else.

Apple has been no help as they consider it just old and maybe it needed a new battery or something...??? Anyone else have this problem?

we got ipad mini 5 and the tab pretty struggle i would said . hmm thanks for info. will stall update .

It happens to me sometimes on my M1 iPad pro. The battery will suddenly drain like crazy for no reasons and can drain from 100% to 0% in 2 days when on standby (like 40-50% per day) but after a hard reset it worked fine again for a good while until it do this again at a random day.

But aside from that, I noticed the battery on both iOS and iPadOS 15.5 isn't as good as 14,4,1 and drain faster on both standby and when I use my devices.

I feel sorry for this to happen. But lesson learned, we may need to keep watch close the device for a while after update. I am still on 15.4.1 and battery so far quite good.

Same here. Drained 5% from 76% in 3 minutes with only Safari running w/one tab and Approx 70% brightness. Hot upper left corner.

Have read somewhere else, someone said 15.5 makes his iPhoneX so hot, the temperature protection is triggered. Maybe the same issue.
