Additional Notes

How to install beta via OTA?
  1. Enable Beta Updates (Settings>General>Software Updates>Beta Updates)
  2. Check and sign into the right Apple ID to access beta
  3. Select which beta you would like to receive (Public/Developer)
  4. Hit "Back" and pull down to refresh
  5. Do an encrypted backup or iCloud backup before installing the beta from release build
  6. Install the beta
If you no longer wish to receive beta updates:
  1. Turn off the Beta Updates (you can also sign out of your Apple ID to unlink your developer account)
  2. Wait for the next public release or follow the guide below to install the IPSW release build
Troubleshoot: Sometimes, the beta update will not show so you may need to enable/disable Airplane Mode or restart your device before rechecking for update.

How to install beta via IPSW on Mac?
  1. You will need to install either Xcode beta or MobileDevice.pkg which can be extracted from the Xcode beta (tap with two finger or right click to Show Package Content>Contents>Resources>Packages>MobileDevice.pkg - this will work on older Macs that do not support the latest macOS or Xcode beta)
  2. Do an encrypted backup in Finder in case you need to restore your device
  3. Hold down Option + Check for Update and select the appropriate IPSW file for your device (whether you're updating to a newer/beta firmware, reinstalling the same firmware or downgrading to previous firmware while retaining all your data) downloaded from Apple using your free developer account. Note: You must have an active internet connection as it will check the IPSW signing status before it will proceed with the update.
  4. Enter your iPhone passcode once prompted to proceed.
Notes/Tips:
  • Always keep a backup in case you need to restore your data if you restore your device
  • It may be better to close all apps before installing the updates and/or turn off your device for about a minute or restart a few minutes after your device is updated
  • You can also manually select the IPSW if you are restoring your device using Option + Restore iPhone. Restore will wipe all your personal data which you will need to restore your backup either using iCloud backup or Finder/iTunes backup
  • You do not need to install the MobileDevice.pkg from each Xcode beta version unless Finder does not recognize the new iOS beta
  • There is no MobileDevice.pkg equivalent to iTunes for PC which would require a new iTunes to support new/beta iOS
  • If you receive a new iPhone, you can connect to Mac to update or restore your device to the latest iOS before setting up your device.
  • You can also use the Recovery Mode/DFU to update or restore your device by manually selecting IPSW

You're right to be frustrated. But at least Apple knows about it and has been working on a solution.

They have been saying the same thing with the Apple Watch handwashing reminders when you get home (not to be confused with the 20 second timer)…for four years!! My advice, don’t believe any fix is coming until it’s actually released.

I wasn’t too happy with beta 2 performance & battery life on my 15PM for the last week or so. Beta 3 has improved on the speed & smoothness, also the battery doesn’t seem to be dropping as fast doing the usual stuff! Early days though, will see how it is tomorrow.

I'm not interested in 18 right now, maybe after Christmas time or even later.
I'm now interested in a stable, nearly bug free and reliable OS for my daily driver.
This is exactly how I feel. Every year when I update to the newest major release it takes on the for it to become even half as stable as the previous major version, iOS 17 in this case.

I think this year there is a lot of potential for bugs with so much of the iOS foundation being changed for ai. Also the fact that there will be a separate EU build, which I will be using, seems to increase the potential.

Pretty happy to wait until maybe January 2025 to update if I can.

Anyone else noticing photos using background time while plugged in, 5 to 10 minutes and hour. Then the storage used by photos growing even though no new photos have been taken or added? This seems to have started in the past week, so maybe beta 2 and 3 related?

I use iCloud Photos which says my library is 2.1gb, but my on device photo storage has grown to 4.6gb. I do not have optimized photos on.

My same exact feelings. For the past few years, I’ve decided to just stay on the last (no-OTA) released update of the previous iOS major version, limiting my updates usually to summer when the operating system is already quite polished. Like now, still on iOS 16.6.1 on my iPhone SE3, and preparing myself to update to iOS 17.6 (if it doesn’t have any battery drain issues), and staying there until iOS 18 isn’t too buggy and proves to keep a decent battery life. Although I already know it’s going to be worse than iOS 17 in that regard because it uses the neural engine for more features.

I’d really like if Apple enabled a parallel software channel, just like the bet channel, for those who want to stay on previous year operating system, while still receiving bug-fixes and security patches during the next year. I think there are many people who prefer or need to have a more stable and reliable device even if that means having the new features one year later… And I think im going to send them this idea as feedback, because I think it is a great idea.

I don’t want to celebrate too early but after installing the beta 3 of iOS 17.6 I had my phone often in battery saving mode and haven’t seen the squared notifications so far or at least it switched to the rounded ones way faster than before.
Hope to finally see a fix for this visual bug.

Does that happen more in battery saving mode? I’ve seen it a few times if I happen to pick up my phone just as a notification is appearing.

For my feeling yes, it happens the most or is the most visible when my phone is in battery saving mode.
