Hi folks, seems like contact poster (for me) defaults to using nicknames for the top text. That’s not what I want to share in most contexts. Anyone know how to change this? Doesn’t seem to be editable as the only fields are first/last name (which aren’t used, nickname replaces them).

Thanks in advance.

I jumped in with Public Beta 3, and now I'm on PB4, and the behavior of contact poster with regards to nicknames is bizarre. In the preview when building a contact poster, it shows your nickname, however, when the final result is saved, the contact poster has my first & last name. Little fit & finish bugs like this will probably be fixed over next couple betas.

I agree (started same time you did). I think my original point is a bug, as there doesn't seem to be any way to either actually share the nickname or not show it. Very strange.

Well currently, if you save your contact poster, it will NOT show the nickname. The only time it shows the nickname is in the “preview” of what it will look like. But once you save it, it will be saved with the first and last name.

There does not seem to be any option to have it show the nickname of the final saved contact poster. I agree it is a bug. Inconsistent and confusing.

Does turning off ‘Prefer Nicknames’ solve the problem?

Settings — Contacts — Short Names

I don’t use nicknames myself, so I can’t test this

Good question! I do have that setting turned on. However, turning it off had no effect, it still used my nickname for the preview, but used my full first name in final saved contact poster—same behavior as before.

I submitted a bug report via Feedback, including a pic showing the First name and a pic showing the nickname instead, and commenting on the inconsistency, and was told it was behaving as expected—and they closed th case. I don’t think they read my report close enough.

My contact posters seem to be reversed from how others are explaining. When I’m editing a contact poster, the preview will show the first and last name. But when someone calls it only shows their first name. I have nicknames turned off. I would actually really like if their company and title could be shown as well. I need last names to show. I have thousands of customers in contacts and when I see that “Phil” is calling from 213 area code, I have to guess.

I’ve also opened many cases for different issues and they’ve been closed as “behaving as expected”.

I just upgraded to iOS 17 for the first time today and was dabbling with this and was having the same issue. The poster in the preview shows only the nickname I have for myself. I couldn't figure out how to change the text, so I deleted my nickname. It then in the preview showed my first name. Then when I saved it, it showed my first and last name. I also don't know what they mean by share with Contacts or Always Ask. Does that mean it asks when someone is calling you whether to show your poster? Too confusing. I'd rather have that real estate for the keypad along with the mute/end buttons on one screen. This feels like Apple trying to turn phone calls into social media, and to be honest (not looking for pity) I don't really have anyone to test this out with anyway. My family are on Android and all the other numbers I call are for businesses or medical facilities.
