Anybody running iOS 17 beta with a recent iPhone seen any improvements with the image post processing? Been mentioned on social media people think it’s improved.

anybody seen any difference?

I think it’s gotten a bit better. I’ve seen some photos posted on social media and can see a bit of a difference. I also heard the front camera is taking better photos too

iOS 17 has definitely improved the image processing. Images are less over processed and have a much much better natural look to them!

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I first jumped on iOS 17, makes shooting a joy now without having to use ProRAW all the time.

I haven’t been able to tell any difference yet and haven’t found any samples yet so not sure what people are talking about. I took some pics yesterday and they looked no different from iOS 16 to me. 🤷‍♂️

What are you basing your comment on? Actual evidence or just based on your own thoughts? Because there are images on Twitter if you look for them which compare iOS 16 and iOS 17 images. I believe Zollotech also mentions it in one of his videos.

Ok, installed iOS 17 (beta 3) and I can confirm the camera has improved.
- more what you see is what you get
- less smart hdr ****
- white balance not changing after taking the picture
- less over brighten and over orange faces
- backlit selfies remain more backlit not horrible hdr

(Some of these points are similar/overlapping but trying to make it clear for everyone).

I’m happy so far, will keep testing.

Anecdotally I’ve been seeing the same.

Before, photos taken in the Camera app were so bad I would take photos in Snapchat and save them from there. It was particularly egregious for pet photos.

I wouldn’t say it’s a massive improvement in iOS 17 B3, but they aren’t as terrible as they were previously.

No they Aren’t at all

the photos have improved a good amount from what they were. Oversharpening has pretty much gone.
I sure hope you’re right.
But how can we “prove” it? Would have to be the same phone before and after, identical subject and same or very similar conditions.
No such photos attached to this thread.
I don’t visit social media sites, but those typically reduce uploaded photos in size and quality, so, for me, they are not a good measure.
And who knows what Apple might come up with before the final release of iOS 17.

All can do is use it and compare to older photos you took. Not many will have two 14 pros around the house to compare side by side but for me it’s a good improvement. It’s still blowing out highlights at times and background scenes but overall images are more pleasing.

Will see how it goes before full release. Simply put Apple is just not processing as much as before.

This is exactly the information i was looking for/Hoping for. The pictures are the worst thing about my 14 pro max. I hope the processing is finally fixed. Thanks

I’ve still not found one example of this, my pics look exactly the same on iOS 17. I don’t have a second iPhone 14 pro to test it on, just my Samsung, and compared the the Samsung the iPhone pictures still suffer from that odd oversharpened/HDR/blown out highlights look that they’ve had for years.

One thing that is clear when you pixel peep, is that the 48mp on the iPhone are shaper than the pics taken on my Samsung with its 12mp sensor. However, the Samsung pictures still look preferable as they are more natural, and don’t have the over processed look of the iPhone pictures.

I’m baffled as to why this has been widely reported, yet not one YouTuber or anyone else has put it to the test using two iPhone 14’s on iOS 17. I am holding out hope for some much needed big big jumps in image quality on the 15 pro’s, can they catch up or beat Huawei? The 14 pro max is rated #9 right now I believe on Dxo mark. I don’t think Apple will even catch up to the Chinese phones, as they just throw everything at them yearly, while Apple seems content to just make tiny incremental upgrades year after year. Until Apple starts taking photography seriously I don’t think they’ll ever re-take that top spot again, we still don’t have an Astro mode like the Pixel phones have had for years. The periscope lens will really help, hopefully they get the sensor and the processing right this time, that P60 pro is nuts!!

For the life of me I don't understand what apple is doing. Give us the option back to turn off smart hdr. The worst is seeing my pictures in proraw being blownout and overprocessed. Whats the point of a raw shot if its edited computeraly?

Does this also apply to the 13 lineup? Cause my 13 mini and 13 pro have had horrible post-processing for the past two years now as well.

I don't see much difference in the default 12mpix HEIC photos, the only way to soften them is to use 48mpix mode on phones that can do that.

There is one aspect I think was indeed improved though - subjects in portrait mode don't look like cardboard cutouts anymore. I used me and my dog as models and the results were noticeably better than on iOS 16, on front camera too.

Interesting... Planning to stick with iOS 16.2 for the time being... I wish we have choices of features that we want our phones to have like the installation choices back in Windows 95/98/ME days... I'm keeping my iPad on iPadOS 13.7 since it is the last version that still looks like the old days of iOS...

As others have said, a photo comparison of iOS 16 and iOS 17 would be nice, not just words describing the change/improvement...

If iOS 17 gets released tomorrow (9-18) I can test that photo comparison for you. I have two iPhones, 14 pro max and I’m a photographer as well. I use ProRAW exclusively, mostly with the NOMO RAW app, that is best and cleanest raw app I’ve ever used. It removes the extra sharpening, cuts back on the luminance layers and gives the user a clean raw file.
  • Image Refinement: With ProRAW as the starting point, NOMO RAW could further remove the artifacts on your mobile photos, including over sharpening, luminance noise, detail loss, etc.
So if you guys want samples, I can provide…

I would love to see them for sure!
