Apple is aiming to release iOS 18.2 for iPhones during the first week of December, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said today, in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. Apple had already confirmed that the update would be released at some point in December, and now we have a slightly more specific timeframe.

The software update includes additional Apple Intelligence features for iPhone 15 Pro models and all iPhone 16 models, including Genmoji for generating custom emoji, Image Playground for generating custom cartoon-like images, Image Wand for transforming a rough sketch into a full image in the Notes app, ChatGPT integration for Siri, and more. Read our list of all new features included in the iOS 18.2 beta so far.

iOS 18.2 also expands Apple Intelligence to localized English in the U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

iOS 18.2 adds a few features beyond Apple Intelligence, including a new "Default Apps" section in the Settings app, daily Sudoku puzzles for Apple News+ subscribers in the U.S., an iMessage nudity reporting option in Australia, and more.

Gurman expects iOS 18.4 to be released in April with additional Apple Intelligence features for Siri, such as personal context and on-screen awareness.

If you generate one of the clever emoji pictures on an Apple Silicon Mac and send it in an iMessage, can you copy/paste the emoji on an older iPhone?

Yeah…. Good….
See you in April Apple.

EDIT: The smarty pants who clicked on Disagree.

Come down here for a moment... Come come. Don't be shy.
Listen... Apple Intelligence doesn't work in Europe until April. OK?... I wrote this down for you.
Now you can smoothly levitate back to your altitude....

It needs work. For example in playground, typing in anything with “Santa Claus” results in a “language not supported” error. (Yes, reported.). Typing in “Christmas tree” results in it asking to “Continue by choosing an inspiration for the person in your image”. There have been other issues too, but I’m hoping the next beta is much improved. It is beta of course so it is too be expected.

Well this does not bode well for me wanting to create only the most chaotically sadistic things 👿

Not surprising. They always seem to close down for several weeks over Christmas and New Year.

I feel like I need to preemptively register “www.cursedgenmoji.com” or “www.imageplaygroundfails.com” to get ahead of all the broken stuff these will generate. Think AutoCorrectFails, but AI driven. Tagline: “These dank memes make themselves.”

I would never bet my life-long reputation on the bold claim that 18.2 will be released in the very first week of December, particularly considering that history shows that iOS releases generally happen around the 11th day of December, firmly within the 2nd week of the holiest month of the year (due to the recurring appearance of Santa Claus, and annual bonus checks.)

If this is true, then this Gurman fellow is a true prophet and cannot be ignored.

I like the direction that 18.2 is taking, but this first significant update to Mail in 18.2 beta 1 seems to have some serious problems with basic notification of new emails, and deleting/archiving. Many times having to repeatedly delete the same message only to have it return. We'll see where the next few betas take us.

On my iPhone 15 Pro with the beta installed it doesn’t matter what I type into the text box I get the same error you get if you try it feed it text that Apple has made off limits. I tried a hard restart this morning and now it won’t even get to the point where I can enter text without displaying “Some features aren’t available at this time”.

I’ve reported it of course. I just got approved to use it Friday night but didn’t have time to really try it out until yesterday. Obviously something is up which is to be expected with a beta.

I might have something interesting to say about image playground or Genmoji, if Apple would turn it on for me. Installed 18.2 beta 1 2 days after release and still haven't made it to the end of the wait list. This does not bode well for the rumored release of 18.2 in the 1st week of December.

It sure would be nice if I could actually use and test it if it is going to be released in December. I do want to add support for genmoji.

I have had the exact same issue. Emails would not delete on my iPhone or iPad. Or a could not add to block list. Jump on one of my Mac’s and could clear them straight away. I have reported this. And battery life is shocking I have been dropping 5% or more in around 10 minutes. Sometimes without use.

It'll be interesting to see how Apple handles ChatCPT. I've been using both ChatCPT and Microsoft Copilot. So far, I've noticed that CPT gets deeper into the weeds, which isn't always relevant. On the other hand, Copilot tends to use a lighter approach and produces a more balanced result. 👨‍🔬

Any device running 18.1+ can show Genmojis, I read on the Apple 18.2 site. Or was that here? 🤔

With the really slow drip feed of features with these .1 updates, I think I may be on the beta until next September at this rate.

Another silly and completely meaningless update from Apple.

As to their iphones, I would like to see Apple:

1. Bring back the Fade-In button for the alarms so the alarms can little by little get louder. Do the same with phone calls.

2. redesign the notification center. It's ridiculous. At the very least add a "Clear All" button that comes up immediately, even if there's only one notification.

3. Apple needs to change that when you tap on the phone notifications WILL NOT automatically dial back whoever called. It needs to only go into the phone app just like it does on all other apps.
All other notifications take you to the app that is notifying you.
Be consistent Apple. People are constantly dialing back spam and robo callers.

4. make it possible to dismiss Calendar and any notification from any app if you're in another app.
This goes for Calendar, News, Timers...whatever the app, you shouldn't have to go to the lock screen or be forced to tap the notification to get into the app sending it in order to simply dismiss a notification if you're in another app when it comes in just put a dismiss button there and it should be gone.

5. give us an LED visual on the front of the phone for notifications in addition to sound and vibration. Allow us to change the colors of the LED light based on what the notification app is.
The fine folks who like things the way they are can just leave this off and everything will be as is.

6. allow us to adjust the intensity of the haptic feedback.
Those who are concerned with battery or simply don't like haptic feedback can leave it off.

7. make it possible to adjust volume for independent apps and settings and not this general thing they're doing.
I, for example, would love for the keyboard clicks and the lock sounds to be muuuuch louder than they are in relations with the rest of the phone and without it affecting any other volume settings.

8. make it possible to customize the texting app in every conceivable way. Font size, bubble size shape color etc. This should not be only done in a phone-wide setting.

9. use an OS-wide clipboard to cut or copy multiple entries each ready to paste long pressing, at least the last 10 cut/copies should be possible. Also make cut and copy not expire until we, the users, clean it.
Also stop with the auto cleaning the cache, you should be able to copy text now and paste it tomorrow if you want to.

10. in Mail give us the option to NOT go to the next email when you are deleting an email but to go back to the inbox. Those who want to keep things the way they are should be able to turn this feature off.

11. make it absolutely mandatory for app makers that they have to have a swipe from left to right in EVERY app throughout the app to navigate back. Having a tiny arrow button at the top left to go back and being able to swype back in other apps is pure nuts.

12. and my goodness Apple... allow us to cancel snooze before it comes on if we want to, and make it possible to have any snooze time we want in the alarm. Not just 9 minutes.
