So I believe that I'm in a rare situation that I'm still using the first generation iPhone (yes from 2007 and crazy I know, but I wanted that white iPhone 4 last year and waited so long now I get the white 4S). At any rate my question I'm looking for advice on is, my device bricked/died yesterday from upgrading the Facebook app (stuck at Apple logo on boot). I did a full restore and it wont activate (iTunes never shows the screen but sees the device), even the Apple store couldn't get it to go and thinks they stopped supporting it. So knowing I just had a few days left before my 4S arrives, I popped the SIM and put into another original iPhone I have with battery life of like 10 mins. However I didn't restore this one and was last used over a year ago. I only care about calls and texts right now so not wasting time to fix contacts or update apps.

So my plan is to activate the new iPhone 4S running iOS 5 on Friday by connecting to my PC and hopefully select a backup file of my old iPhone I have stored there from 2 months ago. Will this work and be OK or am I going to clutter up the new device? I would assume I don't need to try and restore the phone I'm using now with that new backup to migrate over do I?

Thanks for any and all advice!! I can't wait to join the next century of iPhone, LOL!!

Im not sure why you think you would clutter up the device. Just about everyone migrating from an older iPhone to a newer one restores their backups from their previous iPhone.

The only thing I can see you having an issue with is losing the last 2 months of changes to your iPhone since you said the last backup was performed 2 months ago.

Yeah I already accepted that I lost the 2 months of data and some photos from trips that can't be replaced. I should have been doing more backups but it takes 5 hours to complete when I do it.

The clutter issue was only my concern as I'm going from very old iOS 3.1.3 backup and I know so many of my apps can't even be updated right now so all that will be refreshed after activating and migrating over my stuff to the 4S. Thanks for your view and just hope all goes smoothly.

Personally I'd set that 4S up as a new phone. Especially if it is jailbroken, the chance that it'll be buggy/quirky are high. You could always give it a shot and if it doesn't work then restore it and then set it up as new if there are problems restoring from the backup.
