I was updating my iPhone 4 and it had the error "3014" then restarted. Now it is stuck in recovery mode... Any suggestions?

EDIT: Fixed the problem

I downloaded iOS 5 a couple of times for my iPad and it failed. Then suddenly, there was some random error and I restarted iTunes just like the error message said.

My iPad was stuck in a restore mode, I thought it was bricked. A few tries later I could get it to restore because Apple servers could not be contacted. A few tries later it restored and then backed up to my last backup which I did before downloading iOS 5.

Not a phone but same idea. I mildly panicked over twitter.

My phone isn't jailbroken.

Doesn't have to be. Using TinyUmbrella and putting a Cydia entry for gs.apple.com (or whatever it is) into /etc/hosts is also used sometimes to downgrade to a previous OS, or for other reasons. I've never jailbroken before either, but the JB community is great for coming up with help in that sort of situation.

Could just be Apple's servers today

Earth.
Did you try the following
Switch off the phone (if possible)
hold the home button down
whilst holding connect the usb cable

Itunes should recognize the device in recovery mode and restore it.

If that doesnt work, close itunes and look for a utility called RecBoot which can kick an iPhone/iPod Touch out of DFU.

It's almost impossible to brick an iPhone.

Stick with it, try Tiny Umbrella... restore under a different user account, try a different PC if you're using Windows.... keep trying. It's VERY difficult to kill one of these phones.

I finally got it working again *sigh*. After 27 times trying to restore it it finally got through Apple's servers and restored, then restored from my back up. If any of you the same problem keep trying to restore it. Also thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it :)

I'm having a different problem where iTunes keeps prompting for a password to restore the backup, butI didn't enter a password in the first place! I've tried ever likely password I can think of (Apple account password, computer one, phone pass code, etc), but none of them have worked.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this issue?

Wait to see if it goes through. If it does not do anything within the next hour I would call Apple.

I got itunes to recognize it so all I have to do is restore it with Apple. Looks good so far. Thank goodness.

have you looked at this article on apple's website: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error3014

specifically the part:

Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

hope that helps
