I spent several hours last night fighting Error 1611 when updating an iPad2 with iOS5 on a computer running Windows 7. Apple indicates that 1611 is a hardware malfunction.

I would see the error while trying to restore after Windows popped up that a USB device was not recognized. The iPad was bricked at this point.

I finally found that the USB cable needed to be plugged directly into my computer rather than to the side of my monitor. The iPad must be sensitive to weak USB signals caused by extension cables.

I hope that this helps somebody.)

Thank you. I'm having the same issue right now, while using a powered hub to try to update my iPad 2. I'll give this a shot.

edit: this did indeed solve my problem. Thank you!
