When I first updated to iOS 5 I thought it was great. Now not do much unless you have a iDevice with more than 256 mb of ram.

Even with a new iPod touch apps crash that use to never crash with iOS 4.3. I knew that the current touch had limited ram I upgraded for the Retina display

I check the logs and just about everyday it says low memory. If you have a iDevice with 512 mb of ram then you are fine.

Why did Apple bother releasing iOS 5 when it sucks up so much ram?

My iPhones are full of low memory errors, and they both have 512 MB of memory. I have always thought those errors were normal.
I haven't noticed any major problems with memory on my iPad which only has 256 MB. Safari crashes for me all the time, but it has always done that for me.

Wow I did not know that the iPhone 4 also had low memory errors. As I said I don't totally hate iOS 5. I love the new notifications and I like how I can backup my device over the cloud. I just don't like that it is sucking up more ram. I think there is a memory leak. Let's hope it gets fixed in iOS 5.1.

Safari only crashes on intense non mobile optimized sites. The thing is that certain apps did not crash in iOS 4.3 that crash in iOS 5.01 and mainly when I have other apps in the background. In matter of fact the eBay app crashed on me when I purchased the iPod touch. The purchase went through as I am typing on it now but the eBay app never once crashed on iOS 4.3.

The notification center is one of the more obvious sources of higher RAM usage in iOS 5. You can't get something for nothing. So even if there is a leak, fixing it won't bring the RAM usage back in line with 4.x.

That said, low memory "errors" are normal in 4.0 and later. It is part of the multitasking system. Apps are kept in memory until something needs RAM that isn't available. The low memory "error" is the OS kicking out those old processes to make room (it will even mark those processes as 'jettisoned' in the log). In 3.x and earlier, they were actually errors since you only had the foreground app and system processes taking up RAM at any one point.
