Aside from the problems updating my iPhone 3GS 32GB and the horrendous issues regarding MobileMe/iCloud/Apple IDs, I am pleased to say iOS 5 is running great on my iPhone 3GS. Performance is on par with iOS 4, I wouldn't say better, but definitely not worse. Everything runs smoothly. Most notably, is battery life has improved immensely. I would put my iPhone in my pocket at 100% battery with iOS 4 and not use it almost the entire day, and have it left with 40% battery at the end of the day, sometimes with the battery dying at 30%, battery usually died at around 15%.

Today however, with iOS 5, I have used my iPhone A LOT more than usual, and the battery life fared better then when I don't even use my iPhone with iOS 4. After hours on my 3GS with iOS 5, the battery life went all the way down to 3%, I don't think thats ever happened before. I am pleased.

This all doesn't matter to me since I'm upgrading to a White iPhone 4S 64GB:D:D

So glad to hear someone say something positive about ios 5. Everyone has been so negative! I too had some difficulity getting the download installed in my 3gs but my experience with ios 5 has been very positive!...I never noticed until I read your comment that my battery life has improved also. Love the notofications, think I'm going to like the reminders...everything is running smoothly...next I will give this one to my wife and enjoy my new 4S!....:D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Ya. But it was a hassle to update, and worse to restore information, all my app folders were deleted. Then I had two different apple IDs, MobileMe and one for iTunes. It's still messed up, because I need lion for iCloud (on SL), and I need to keep MobileMe to sync everything, I'm not converting that to iCloud. I turned my iTunes one into iCloud and once I get lion I'll delete MobileMe and move the syncing. Syncing is all I've used in MobileMe

The speed on my 3GS improved. Folders open up, all the animations are snappy, the Notifications center has no lag (except a bit with the Stocks widget), and most importantly, Safari runs like a breeze.

So far, love it.

However, 3rd party widgets would be much appreciated, Apple! And a status in the status bar that indicates when you have notifications pending.

I loaded iOS 5 on two iphone 4 phones and one 3GS...my 4 is NOT doing well on battery...in fact, it went from 100% to 19% by 1PM...I will normally make the day with around 30-40% remaining...so a major drop...now I'm sure some has to do with extra use playing with the new features...but that was pretty significant.

Also...has anyone else noticed sluggish behavior at times...switching to messages...zooming on web pages?

For me, the speed of my 3GS has drastically improved. I don't know if this is because I set it up as a new phone instead of just restoring from backup or the OS but the animations seem faster and apps open faster for me as well.

And I have had 0 problems so far upgrading to iOS5 and I love the new features on it especially the notification center. It's awesome.

The problems encountered in the download didn't particulary bother me, because I anticipated them. I knew there would be a mad rush to upgrade to ios 5. All things considered I think the experience went well!....:apple:

IOS 5 vs. 3GS - I'm having huge problems...

Hi All,

Hope this is the right place to be posting this - have looked at other 3GS threads and you all seem to be most informed...and the most positive.

My 3GS is Orange/Jailbroken
iTunes is now v. 10 with IOS 5 update
I have tried and failed to upgrade my iPhone to IOS 5

I am stuck on the new Configure screen
I have put iPhone in DFU mode, clicked option/restore but get no drop down menu with previous versions...

So I can't get restore without iTunes insisting on this new update and currently my phone is a paperweight...and/or about to get thrown out of my window!

Please help - i'm phoneless and frustrated!

there isn't a drop down for previous versions!
If you're in DFU, click restore (or alt-click to find the ipsw yourself) and it should be dandy.
Your post doesn't quite make sense are you looking to upgrade or downgrade, sir?

it doesn't make sense to me either sir, and i am a madam, by the way )

its the alt-click i am having trouble with - i'm getting into 'slightly advanced for me' waters...

so i put the iphone in DFU, and when it is OFF click alt-click on the restore button on itunes?

if i took it to an Apple shop would they fix it? or tell me lies...

sorry, madam then

Okay, if you've downloaded the IPSW separately you should be able to search for it.

1 - put your phone into DFU [power off, turn on and hold home for 10 secs, release power but keep holding home; screen will be black. Here's a video if you need help with it]
2 - in iTunes click restore, it should automatically use the iOS5 firmware, if not try the 'alt-click' on the restore button method.
3 - your phone should now be restoring

edit: if you're on windows i think it's shift-click, instead of alt-click

i posed this in the "impressions thread" but maybe this is a better place. i have the 3gs and when i use the ipod controls on the lock screen (which i do every day), i have noticed that when the controls disappear, the song skips at that moment. however, if i play the song and then black out the screen using the power button, no skip. anyone else noticing this glitch?

other than this minor detail, i've been very happy with my upgrade. gives me more incentive to wait it out for the shiny new iphone 5 :)

I'd say my update went 90% right. Downloaded first the update, then installed it.

The only issue was with the previous music being erased in the process. Not a big deal since only had some 30-40 songs, but I can imagine something like this happening to a large library!

In general everything seems to run smoothly. I had one instance when the Camera didn't work: tap on Camera, it appeared like the app started, could even take photos by approximating the location of the shutter on the screen or using the volume button, but no image on the screen. Just a dark screen to look at! A simple re boot solved the problem.
