IOS 8 Adoption lags behind previous versions.

We reported a few weeks ago that through the first 24 hours iOS 8 adoption was lagging behind that of iOS 7 a year ago, and it seems that is still the case a few weeks in. Analytics firm Fisku says that twelve days after release iOS 8 is lagging behind both iOS 6 and iOS 7 adoption rates, although independent analysts put the number above Fisku's figures but still falling short of iOS 7.


While iOS 8 is still putting rival ecosystems to shame, such as Android and Windows Phone, it seems to be less popular than iOS 7 and 6 initially. Both of those operating systems had easily passed the 50% market, while iOS 8 is still not up to 40% adoption after twelve days. Other predictions say that it is actually closer to 50% than that but still trails its predecessors.

It is not all doom and gloom though as iOS 8 is still likely to surge over the year and claim most people's iOS experience, even if it does take longer. You would have to go back to iOS 5 to see a slower moving version of Apple's mobile platform, although those days you needed to hook up to iTunes to pull the update.

Apple?s last official information on the matter came on September 21st when the company said that 46% of all users visiting the App Store were running iOS 8. Of course, that is hardly a definitive account of how many actually have downloaded the latest version. The only thing left is to ask why iOS 8 adoption is lower.

Apple has built iOS 8 as the most drastic overhaul of the platform ever and has added more and more functionality that borrows some of Android's trick. However, iOS 7 ushered in a new design and perhaps to the average user they considered that the big overhaul that iOS 8 actually is, so were quicker to download it.

I don't know anyone with iPhones who have updated. The few I've questioned about it say they've heard there's problems with it.

Not my intention at all. I am an IOS 8 user on my IP6. It has issues......there is a reason why it has not been adopted as fast as other versions.

On the contrary, guys - it is precisely in this sub forum that you can post about something like this without inciting a flame war. If someone wanted to stir up a fight they would post it in the iOS forum where a larger percentage of iOS-only users spend their time.

I haven't been keeping to abreast of this as of yet as I got my 6+ just last week and it has been flawless on iOS, but what are the major bugs that are being complained about?

I have not seen one yet.

My ipad and the wifes ipad and iphone are still on 7.1.2

I'm waiting on jailbreak as usual .

Told my wife and anyone else who asks to postpone upgrading for now.

.1.x releases tend to be much better than .0.x

I HATE that you cannot downgrade iOS

I updated my 4S to iOS 7 as soon as it was released and then regretted it...but one of the first updates cured all the problems. With this release I don't dare take the step quite yet...

Very weird. I havent encountered either but I also didnt start out on 8. I got the phone after the update was already out for iOS 8 so maybe thats why.

yeah, it is a hit or miss. A lot of people lost cellular service. The only problem I have ever had with an iphone was the antenna on the iphone 4.

I'm on iOS 8.0.2 - neither my 6 nor my 6+ have any real horrible issues.

Still waiting on some devs to get their acts together and apps updated (or perhaps its Apple that's backlogged).

My wife has been having issues though. Random restarts, freezing. Curious.

Thinking about making her do a full restore but I don't want her to lose any photos. For whatever reason she isn't eligible for the iCloud Photo Beta and pre iOS 8, the whole Photos thing was a real mess.

I suppose I could back up photos to my MBA and then put them back after the restore. If the issues continue I will.

8.0.1 certainly did scare some people away, I'm sure. But by 8.1 and on it'll all be fine.

Given the ridiculous number of APIs, SDKs and new display sizes, I expected more issues with this release than years prior. Too many behind the scenes changes.

When you re-paint something, it's usually not too hard to keep it working well. But when you take apart the engine and put it back together with new parts and features, sometimes you have problems.

It's still only been out for about a month.....I remember my Nexus 5 having issues on Kit Kat - cellular radio would completely drain my battery in a matter of hours whether I was using the device or not. It got squared away a couple of months later.

No problems here either. My 6 has been flawless, in fact I have BT on 24/7 and always connected to a minimum of 2 pieces of hardware (Martian smartwatch and Nike+ Fuelband), but have had up to 5 connections at once. No problems.

iPhone 6 here and I'm seeing a few bugs; when searching from the OS the keyboard fails to spring up maybe 50% of the time, I also get very occasional touchscreen unresponsiveness when in landscape mode.

I wish Apple would test their stuff.

for me....Swiftkey works sporadically. Bluetooth works sometimes. I have 3 Bluetooth speakers and it works great. My truck has Bluetooth...worked great with my IP5s. My IP6...not so good it is a hit and miss.......it will play music sometimes. I have had to delete it and re-pair it 3 times now. I tried to use Maps over the weekend voice navigation would not play over Bluetooth. It had no sound at all. Unpaired it and it worked from my phone only.......
