Hi, Just got my new iPhone 6s, 16GB and it tells me the total capacity is 11.8GB that 4.2 GB less than what is said, thats like 25%! Enormous!

Anybody has a solution? Is that normal?

Well, first 16 GB is the marketing capacity, with the actual capacity being around 14.9 GB. Then there's how much the OS itself takes up, which is around a couple of GB as well. I'm not certain if 11.8 GB free is about right for a fresh install, but it likely won't be any more than somewhere in the 12 GB range at best.

yeah, but I mean its too much.... 25 percent less space than theory. I understand there will be less than 16 but that much difference!! my iPhone 4s with iOS 8 has 13 Gb on a 16 GB. I think thats to abusive and I will protest!!!

Don't you agree?

Marketing in "GB" (or 1 GB = 1000 MB) is common, when in reality it's actually "GiB" (or 1 GB = 1024MB), making it 14.9 GB. The OS does take a few GB, 3 GB is not uncommon. If you really needed more space, the 64 GB option would have been better.

No, because the percentage of space used for the OS is higher for lower capacity devices than higher ones. 8GB users start with about half of what is advertised. The OS doesn't require less space just because it's on a smaller device.

no we don't. you can keep protesting all you want. alternatively, do some tech research on how to sell a phone with an OS which occupies no space, and maybe you'll become a billionaire.

I'm pretty sure iOS 9 takes up more space on the 6s Plus because it had a bigger screen and bigger camera...

You can still squeeze out as much free space you can out of your storage by using Battery Doctor on the App Store.

It's a cache cleaner tool disguised as a battery management app, and it works.

And yes, it is safe, lol.

Yes, its as good a placebo as it can get. Apps like these are a scam. They fundamentally cannot work, since ios restricts (for good reason) access of system internals (like charging rate, free space) to 3rd party apps.

The battery saving "feature" on the app may probably be a scam, but the cache cleaning part actually works. I know, I was surprised too.

Check it out yourself.

I did check it out just 2 mins ago. It doesn't work. Please think about it - it cannot work. If it did, wouldn't there be many malware apps who can access the cache and put malware there? or some other mischief?
