Last night, I had my iPhone plugged into my PC to charge. That same day, I upgraded to iOS 9.3.1 from the most recent current version.

I went to check my data usage which I usually do before I go to bed. I noticed over a period of just over 15 minutes, my iPhone swallowed up over 144 MB of data. That is simply nuts. I checked all my settings including the iOS data counter on apps and how much they use and none of them were huge.

I wonder if there is an issue/bug with Rogers and the iPhone?

It's not "simply nuts" if you were watching a short video or were viewing a site that has lots of content on. If you were on Facebook, well, they auto-play videos now so that might be it. Do you know what you were doing in those 15 minutes?

EDIT: 144MB isn't a lot by the way. How much data do you have?

I guess this may not seem much to you, but that's a lot when the device was idle. Would I post a message about this issue I have if I was actually watching a movie or on FB? Any way, my data cap is not important. What is important is no apps were active, push was disabled, auto update of apps is disabled, wifi-assist disabled, and the listing of apps didn't reveal the source of the data hog or why. There is no explanation why the surge in data when the phone was idle. BTW, this issue has been reported in other forums including Apple: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7245223?tstart=0

There is no issue. Apple and Rogers (or any other carrier) are business partners. It is so easy to put a option in settings to fix it but Apple hasn't for years.

How do you know the exact minutes during which the data was used?

Agree. It shouldn't be a data cap issue to try to shrug off a usage bug, but for the record to those who scoff, in Canada there are $80 smart phone plans that only include 500mb/mo.

I would not own an iPhone if I were limited like that.

Like I said I am glad I do not have to worry.

This is choice Canadian have to make. You either choice to shell out for 900 dollar for iPhone 6S unlocked, 570 dollars for iPhone SE or over 1000 dollars for iPhone 6S plus. This way will give you flexibility to choice plans and from cheaper carriers like (Public Mobiles or Wind) or you pay over 100 dollars per month for 2 years if you want any decent amount of data (1GB cost 100 dollars plus tax).

Not a lot of people want shell out 1000 dollars on one go and not lot of people want to pay over 100 dollar per month. So people stuck with cheaper plan with not a lot data.

If 144mb of data were used during 15-minute period, it is huge. I assume you were connected to wifi, and disabled cellular features for many apps if you are conscious about your data usage. I use 200mb per day (10-hour period) with FB, messaging apps, Safari browsing, news apps, etc.

Call Rogers to actually verify how much data you spent this billing month, and check if they match your data-monitoring app.

And yet, some have to.

Anyway, I also know someone who's iCloud went berserk and chewed through their 2gb cellular plan in a day and then started overages. Things go sideways sometimes, it shouldn't have to get to some pre determined level of awful to pro actively try to troubleshoot an issue.

Your data cap IS important. I understand now why, to you, 150MB is huge considering you only have 500MB.

check for iCloud settings. Maybe pics uploading/syncing, safari links updating. Sometimes it gets hung up doing stuff. If it was plugged in then maybe iCloud backup? Bottom line, I would look at iCloud as the culprit.

Make sure WiFi assist is turned off, it's in Cellular Options at the bottom. I'm also from Canada and feel your pain, we are getting ripped off with our Cellphone plans.

yeah i've had this happen a few times where it gobbled up 90 MB for nothing. (no apps were in use). and the usage was tracked under "Other" or something. Cant remember exactly.

I just keep my data turned off unless i need it. (in Wifi range 80% of the time)
Seems to help the battery life too.

And yeah 90 MB is alot for me. Also one of the unlucky canadians with 500mb cap. But only paying $28 a month since it's an old plan.

This is hilarious. There is a thread complaining about how the max limit for an app download over cellular is only 100MB and here is a thread complaining about data usage.
