Every time I watch YouTube vids on my iPhone using Safari, when I open a new Safari session, the videos stop playing. How can I make Safari to play YouTube videos while I can browse other sites using a different session or window using Safari?

I find this really annoying...There is lack of multi-tasking here...

As in play in the background? Or still have it on screen as well?

As in playing in the background.
I don't need to actually watch the videos but listening to the presentations. It would be nice to browse other sites while listening at the same time.

Pretty sure that's mostly a YouTube limitation so that you would get YouTube Red essentially.

Not only YouTube, but when I stream audio or video using Safari, the streaming stops when I open up a session of Safari.

You need a separate app to either play the audio or browse the internet, Google Chrome, for example, can do either.

Probably done on purpose by Apple so Safari doesn't use a lot of battery.

Go to the App Store and download Tubex. It will play background audio while you're in other apps.

If so thats a pretty disappointing admission on apples part of their hardware efficiency. I could play background audio in safari tabs on my 4S in 2011. im leaning towards YouTube punishing mobile users who don't upgrade to "red".

Oddly this works for playing the audio and LEAVING safari, but if you want to simply switch to another tab, the control centre play button will force you back to the full screen video.

The lame solution might be to start the video playback in safari and then switch to Chrome or some other browser to visit other sites. Or as another person posted use tubex to play the video in the background. Either way it seems you have to split the duties betwee two apps.

This is the correct answer. That's all you need to do to play YouTube videos in the background.

Use the protube app. There is an app called Opener which you can access from the share sheet that can let you open Safari youtube videos in the youtube client of your choice.

What I won't give for PIP on my iPhone...

Hi guys, sorry for the very late feedback here, but my issue is not resolved. I don't know, maybe this is by design, but I want to be able to listen to YouTube video presentations and every time I press the Home button, the YouTube stops playing from Safari browser...I have many YouTube presentations to listen to and I want to be able to take notes or Google something whenever the presentation mentions something interesting to lookup. And I cannot do that because when I press the Home button, the presentation stops. I want to somehow multitask like browsing the web while listening to these presentations in YouTube using Safari.

Even when opening a new Safari session, the YouTube video/presentation stops....

Please help.

Have you tried the suggestions posted in the thread? You cannot open a second tab in Safari and have the presentation play in the background. Additionally, Google does not allow the YouTube app to play media in the background (unless you subscribe to YouTube Red). You need to use two separate apps, with at least one capable of background play, like Chrome and Safari. Then you should be able to open a browser while the presentation plays in the background. If it stops, you can reopen it from Control Center without it going full-screen as long as you're not in the app that is playing it. I have done this before and it worked for me.

If you can, try the suggestions and tell us if it works.

Why are you so set on using Safari to play the video? Just download Tubex or another third party YouTube app and it will play in the background with all the Safari tabs open you want.

To go one step forward beyond the 'playing in background' PIP or split screen is the next thing people will ask for. All this has to be programmed by apple.

Those things are available from Apple and up to developers to include in their apps.

Split screen wasn't made available to the iPhones
Right (primarily due to the smaller screen sizes that Apple felt wouldn't provide for a good split screen experience). But the capacity for it is there for devices that support it.
