Since updating all the retained email on my devices which contained graphic content or pdf attachments are now saying "message has not been downloaded from server." These emails had been download previously, with content, and are no longer available on the server.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Pop3 email, unless you originally chose to save a copy on the server, if you deleted from the server, it's gone. Have you logged on to your email from the web access to see if it's still there?

I was afraid of that!

Similar problem here. Updated to 9 on my iPhone 6 and everything in my Mail inbox disappeared. I use gmail so I logged in via a browser on my Macbook and everything is gone there too. And it is simply gone--I tried searching the trash folder for a couple of the emails but no luck, they're just gone.

I just talked to Desmond at Apple, he sees that other people have reported the same issue, and they're working on it. I would suggest that we should be squeaky wheels and all contact Apple through their website, they called me right away.

I followed your advice (provided in apple communities) and contacted Apple Support. I told support person that I had deleted the corrupt emails from my idevices, but kept them on my computer. I also said that since 8/18/15 (when problem began & I deleted the emails), I haven't had a recurring incident. The support person gave me a "Case #" in the event it happens in the future (felt like the proverbial pat on the back). I still do not know if/when it will happen again. I'm hoping that this only happened with vouchers & ad-based emails that were on my server prior to upgrading (?) to iOS 9.

Still no love that I can see... I just tweeted to @tim_cook, not that it will do any good, but it made me feel better. Maybe if we all did it and tagged #apple, the press might start noticing...?

Has anyone tried iOS 9.0.2 to see if this fixes it yet?

Of the 7 iPhones & iPads in this household, 2 show this problem, both with POP email accounts. Luckily, no emails permanently lost here.

The part that surprised me is that anyone is still using POP3 email.

I've tried to move them to IMAP, but (up until now) POP3 has been simple and reliable for years. IMAP works better for me, but then again I collect email on (blimey!) 5 different devices.

Seven different email addresses using Thunderbird and many years of back mail I use for reference. It would be a nightmare to try to switch to IMAP. 9.0.2 *seems* to have fixed the issue however.
