- Double press home button on lockscreen quickly launches wallet.
App Store:
- App Store reviews no longer allowed when using a beta version of iOS.
- App Thinning allows the App Store to only download the assets needed for the device you are using.
- On-demand resources allows iConnect to host assets for later download.
News:
- Adds a new app called News which provides curated lists of personalized news content for iOS users, offering up content from popular websites and newspapers and displaying it in an iOS-friendly layout. This app replaces the Newsstand app
- The News application will be available to users in the US, UK, and Australia at launch.
Find My iPhone:
- Find My iPhone is now pre-installed on iOS 9.
Mail:
- You can now add attachments to your messages in the Mail app which sources documents from iCloud Drive.
- Support for saving attachments to iCloud Drive.
- Icons added to left and right swipe gestures.
- Markup lets you annotate images and add signatures.
- If you are sent a link to the App Store in an email, pressing the link will open a pop up window rather than going directly to the App Store.
Maps:
- Adds support for transit directions in Apple Maps in select cities. Also, popular places such as restaurants, stores, and points of interests will be highlighted and presented to the user in a central location. Apple Maps will even tell a user whether a retailer accepts Apple Pay or not.
- Adds support for "Follow up by Email" that allows Apple to email you about issue you report.
- Maps will now announce an "Event" that is on your route as you approach it during navigation.
Messages:
- Contact Pictures in list view
- Redesigned overlay when sending an audio clip.
Music:
- Stream High Quality option in Music Settings.
- Home Sharing returns (removed in iOS 8.4).

Notes:

Notification Centre / Notifications / Widgets:
- Notifications are no longer sorted by application, they can instead be sorted by day starting with recent notifications.
- Notification Centre Widget "Batteries" (when paired with a Bluetooth device). This will also show the battery level next to the Bluetooth icon in the status bar.
Podcasts:
- The Podcasts App has a new Unplayed tab which will show you your podcasts which have not yet been played.
- The Podcasts App has a new redesigned icon.
Phone:
- Adds WiFi Calling support for iPhone users on AT&T. This feature was previously limited to T-Mobile and Sprint users.
Safari:
- "Find on page" and "Request Desktop Version" now accessed from Share Sheet.
- Support for content blockers.
- A long press on the refresh button in Safari now offers to request the desktop page or to reload without content blockers enabled.
- "Paste and Search" in Safari URL bar.
- You can choose the background colour and font in the Reading List
Settings:
- You can now search settings.
- There are now video recording settings to change the quality of your recorded videos.
- When changing wallpapers, there is a new "Still" option which keeps the wallpaper still.
- There is a new iCloud Drive app which can be enabled in the iCloud Settings.
- Battery moved to the top level.
- Updated Notifications icon.
- Additional options for Auto-Lock - When in Low Power Mode, this setting is over-ridden, the setting gets locked to 30 seconds.
- Wallpapers
- Adds 15 new wallpapers to iOS which replace most of the wallpaper that was present in iOS 8 as well as removing the default wallpaper present in iOS 9 betas 1-4
- 4K video recording (30FPS) setting with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.
- Lock / Unlock, this allows the Smart Cover on the iPad to wake and unlock the iPad when opened.
- 3D Touch can be turned Off or On in "Settings" -> "General" -> "Accessibility" -> "3D Touch". The sensitivity can be be adjusted and you can also do a sensitivity test. (iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus)
- When declining a software update, you have the options of being reminded later or allowing the iOS device to update automatically overnight when plugged in.

Siri:
- Siri has a new colorful interface, similar to that of the Apple Watch.
- Removed sound from Siri activation.
- Updated Siri icon in Settings.
- Ability to ask Siri to Remind you of items on screen.
- Siri can now use an accent (same language) which differs from your input language.
- Siri no longer asks you to confirm reminders that are created.
- New "Hey Siri" setup screen (under settings) to calibrate with your voice. "Hey Siri" will work on battery on the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.
Photos/Camera:
- Added preview scrubber bar to photo viewer.
- Screenshots and Selfies albums added.
- Hide photo added to Share Sheet.
- Ability to hold and select multiple photos.
- Videos now have a redesigned scrubber at the bottom of the screen.
- Live Photos for iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. This can also be used on the Apple Watch as an animated clock face running watchOS 2.0.
Reminders:
- Share Sheet extension.
- Shows number of overdue items for each list next to title.
iBooks:
- Safari extension to turn a webpage into a PDF and open it in iBooks.
CarPlay:
- Adds support for wireless CarPlay
- Lets users access the car's settings (such as climate control) through the CarPlay interface itself.
- Battery level indicator added to onscreen display.
Health:
- Added landscape view.
- New data points for sexual health, UV exposure, water intake, and sedentary state.
Keyboard:
- New keyboard now displays whether the letters are upper-case or lower-case depending on whether the Shift key has been toggled or not.
- Copy/Paste functions on the keyboard have been replaced with an Undo/Redo button. The Copy/Paste buttons still appear when text is selected.
- Over 50 new flag emoji's
- A two-fingered gesture on the keyboard will convert the keyboard to a track pad to move the cursor and make it easier to manipulate text.
- Ability to disable character preview.
UI:
- Helvetica Neue font used in iOS 7/8 replaced by San Francisco font used on Apple Watch.
- It is possible to go directly back to an app that was previously being used if an ad is tapped in an app or on the internet.
- Recent Contacts have been removed from the multitasking UI. They have now been placed in the new Proactive Menu.
- Handoff is now displayed as a pull up menu in the appswitcher.
- Redesigned Voice Control audio waveform.
- Redesigned audio dictation audio waveform.

Battery:
- New Low Power Mode disables Background App Refresh, Mail Fetch, Motion Effects, and Animated Wallpapers. It also extends device's battery life up to three hours.
- Low Power Mode automatically turns off when battery is charged to 80% capacity. This can be enabled again on the Lock Screen by swiping the notification and pressing "Enable again".
Find My Friends:
- Find My Friends is now pre-installed on iOS 9.
- Notification Center Widget.
Spotlight Search:
- A more intelligent Spotlight search provides info such as Weather, News, Stocks, nearby places, and recent/favorite contacts based on the user's preference. Spotlight search can be activated by swiping to the left on the home screen or swiping down on the first page of the home screen.
- Spotlight can also perform many useful tasks such as currency conversions and calculations.
- Adds support for a proactive assistant, which recognizes and does tasks for you based on info. For example, if an invitation is shown in Mail, it will automatically be added to the Calendar app.
Improvements to the iPad experience:
- Two apps are now viewable on screen at a time in a split view, or with Slide Over
- Support for a floating picture-in-picture video while doing other tasks.
- Folders on iPad use a 4x4 layout rather than 3x3.

Performance and Stability enhancements:

Security:
- Touch ID devices now use a 6-digit passcode by default, though a 4-digit option is still available alongside options for a passcode with a custom number of digits and an alphanumeric passcode.
