iOS everything?

So, Apple's churning out new iOS devices every year, it seems. There has been a lot of speculation that iOS will eventually replace OS X, with OS X only being used by professionals.

Regardless of whether or not that's true, it seems quite clear that Apple sees the future as a place where computers are closed, simple, easy boxes. Indeed, Steve Jobs has had this view pretty much since day 1.

But what's your opinion on that? Don't get me wrong, I like the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. But iOS could never take the place of a proper system in my opinion. It may have loads of apps, but it's far too closed out to be a proper operating system I'd use on a computer.

Of course, jailbreaking sorts that out, but do you really want to have to hack your computer just to use it as you'd like?

I fear the future of Apple will be a lot more restricted, and I don't look forward to it.

Apple would be incredibly dumb to try and control the desktop like they have the iPhone.

Users expect to be able to run whatever application they like. In the case of OSX, this would mean a lot of software being disabled in one stroke.

A move towards a controlled desktop is indicates an Apple who only caters for the lowest denominator of consumer. Anyone else, especially power users should avoid Apple computers.

Anyway, I don't think Apple would control the desktop - it is not needed and will only annoy a good proportion of users.

From what I've read apple is considering rebranding OSX as some sort of iOS desktop name. That's not to say it will be as locked down as iOS or have an app store.

With that said, they've made some patents applications that reference integrating advertisements in the OS, so its possible that they may move to a basic iOS desktop with Ads and maybe an app store, and a professional version of iOS which is the OSX we know.

This is all speculation as apple is extremely Secretive and I suspect they're more focused on fixing this PR nightmare that has erupted with the iPhone 4.

Pure spéculation here of course but let me know if this make sense. Given the quality of the iPhone 4 display which renders a 960×640 definition, I was thinking that Apple could as well bundled the iOS in future verisons of Mac OS and offer it as a sort of Instant OS. Does this make sense ? I mean at some point it makes sens for Apple to place iOS (which is Mac OS X-based) inside their computers right?

Another idea that crossed my mind was the download of iOS apps and their integration in Dashboard or as stand alone mini apps.

now in both case one may wonder what do to about the multi touch part of this OS on a Macbook. What do you think Apple has in mind ?

i'm ssurprise we still haven't heard anything official about 10.7 or whatever will be called the next OS...

Now there's a thought. what about all the folks that (perhaps some like myself) who would like to have a full Mac OS but would also like to have access to some of the apps which are available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad but dont necessarily want to have to buy an iPad to access them.

Thinking further, what about the 'rumored' MBA with the 11.6" screen, I wonder if Apple is already one step ahead of us in this???? Food for thought...

I cannot see them replacing OS X with iOS. Too many people have alot invested in OS X software. As for not hearing anything about a possible OS X 10.7, perhaps Apple feels that at its current state OS X does not need any improvements at the moment and would like to focus on the new products to ensure they are of high quality. OS X is a well established product already.

The mac has been around for 25ish years and is pretty much their flagship product imho. People are aware of the iMacs existence, so it makes alot of sense to me that they are focusing most of their time to the newer products to bring them onto the same level as the imac. I cant see them alienating such a large part of their user base. So just because we havent heard any word of OS X 10.7 does not mean that it will never come. However if they do insist on pushing iOS to mac users, I would hope it would be as a UI option for OS X similar to Gnome/KDE for Linux giving the users a choice.

In any case, if they do decide to use iOS on the mac Im sure just about any serious mac user would have to migrate over to windows or linux. I for one would not look forward to returning to Windows. I have been a loyal Apple user for a while now and I for one would not want to continue to purchase any Apple products if they were to toss mac users to the side like that.

I think iOS will gradually move up in the spectrum of size/price in Apple devices. However I still see Mac OS X still existing in the higher-end Macs even many years from now.

iOS is a *limiting* experience, when talking about the flexibility and availability of applications, compared to the full blown OSX.

OS X isn't going anywhere. If anything, you'll see a merging of the two platforms, gradually, over time. Which is nothing but good news for both iOs and OS X.

The only "limiting" thing here is your thinking.

The future of computing is similar the usage of a car or a TV. Just turn it on/off.
This is shown on ipad. An this is only beginning.

This is just near future. iOS X will be little bit more complex, but the basic idea of closed super user friendly OS will be there.

I don't think Mac OS X is going anywhere. It and iOS serve different purposes, and Apple would be absolutely foolhardy to drop OS X in favour of iOS.
