I have with the ios felt kept away from much of the creativity the PC gave me so I decided to put my ipad pro to some productivity use for once.

The plan was to create a ringtone from a you tube clip. ( the old tarzan scream) ...

Anyone know how to make a ringtone using a clip from youtube sound?

choosing ringtone of own choice should be very very simple on a phone in 2016?

what have I missed?

There used to be a way to cut and convert in itunes but this is 2016 now... how you guys make ringtones on the fly ?

and how do I edit the title in a post in here?

For making ringtones, I often use software like GoldWave, Sound Studio to cut the part I want, then do some fade-in, fade-out, and convert, and save as a ringtone.
All need to be done on a PC. I don't think iPad or iPhone has such ability to make ringtones on the fly, although there are apps supporting creating ringtones on iOS device.

You should be able to create your own ringtones using garageband for iOS, but I am not sure if you can import youtube sounds from it. Getting the song from youtube might also be another challenge.

I simply do not understand why apple make this ringtone stuff so difficult. I love ringtones... and ringtones used to be a big thing during the nokia days and a vital part of personalising your very personal phone.

you should be able to take any sound from net or recorded and make ringtone of...why not? '

yes apple does want you to buy them... but why in 2016?

changing background is so easy on any device whynot ringtone on a phone?!

I miss a "use as ringtone" option under a soundfiles options.

Apple has taken one of the vital personalisations of a phone and put it in a uniform, boring and very limited money making maschine

they should reinvent the free choice of ringtone

maybe the people could buy the ringtone option free? if we paid more money for the phone so apple could feed the piggy investors more money maybe we could get our own right to choose?

I dare Tim Crook to very easy personalise his very personal iphones most important thing....or what used to be....the ringtone

try to imagine that the only backgrounds to choose from was the ones apple gave you and if you wanted a new one you would have to pay. If you wanted a picture of your kids on your phone ....forget it.
this is what apple did to the ringtones!

For the ringtone purchase stuff, TBH, anyone with a decent audio editing software can create a ringtone with possibly the exact same effect and result, as those paid ones. Buying a 30s clip with the price tag of a full version song is simply insane and very hard to understand. Just does not make any sense.

Back to Nokia era, I had a Nokia E72, with physical keyboard. The typing speed was just so fast. And Symbian OS for that phone (forget the version number) allows a user to use an entire song as a ringtone, be either phone call one, SMS one, or even more.

However, given that Apple has Apple Music, and some other cloud based stuff, I doubt if Apple could reintroduce that feature, "set as ringtone". But, Android does allow user to do so. Sad.

This is what apple did to the ringtones!

we are 7 billion people allmost everyone with a phone... and it is not possible to decide your own personal ringtone in 2016 on an apple device!

I give up apple.... sell me a ringtone adaptor
[doublepost=1464955043][/doublepost]im running windows on a tablet and there is some issues with otg and iphone connection.

so far it would be the old fasion way (or not old old fasion way with wave editor and stuff).

edit length in itunes and save as acc ...then I put the file in Icloud.

anyway to use the icloud m4r file as ringtone/ save as ring tone from icloud?

I think apple went to war with the ringtone business and killed that business during that war... they stole the business from a lot of people and killed it and during that killed the ringtone.

maybe okay back in 2008 with iphone 1 and few users but now.

Im sure it was because Jobs had some thing against annoying ringtones
I liked them and they were personal, catchy and subject of talk...even creating personality back in the day when music meant something. now there is boomboxes and 4 speaker phones everywhere instead so why not just bring back the noise

Use PC to finish this task and go for it.
iOS ringtone only allows max of 40s for phone call, and 30s for all others so.

Save yourself a headache and go to http://audiko.net/ and just search for your ringtone and download it in m4r format (iOS ringtone) The site also provides tools to create your own ringtone.

Ringtones are annoying - we don't live in the age of Nokia now. Plus, with Apple Watch, ringing phones can be a thing of the past, as Taptics take over! I would never sweat this much over a ringtone in a million years.

My phone has pretty much been in silent mode since the day I bought it. I have owned an iPhone since 2011 and oddly enough, have never thought of changing the default ringtone.

Consumption device let's you buy ringtones, surprise surprise.
what apple sold me at the presentation of ipad 12 (even along with microsoft to try and convince me) was a productive device.

With all the sound and video editing options, cloudservice and so on I found making a personal ringtone for my personal ringing device a simple productivity thing....even it should not be ...again go back 10 years and it was part of simple symbian settings.

Atleast there could be a "use as ringtone" option there is a standard apple sound recorder app how difficult would it be to ad an option in that one.

the local band, my mother, my dog, the sound of my home alarm, someones kids, the scream of tarzan or simpson or any other does not have a track published on Itunes... I could even imagine in the future apple trying to sell me the sound of my own voice :)

edit. just opened itunes ringtones on phone....horrified by the milking going on in this ringtone section! apple should be ashamed. set the ringtone free again

I allways saw the difference between android and ios as a car with all the differences that comes with that and a new clean modern subway.
My problem is that apple on top straps me to the seat of that subway in order to serve musicindustry and investors.

you should actually get paid to play your 10 second ringtone as it is of great commercial value to that track.

Title mentioned productivity, I was disappointed :(
sorry :) did not know how to change title and sorry even this simple task that can not even be called productivity is not possible.

okay....then i take a little bit of my critique.

with the new live loop its a little different and not an easy on the fly process but still garageband gives plenty of options for such a simple task.

thank you M. Gustave

still I miss a "save as ringtone" option in apple recorder.

Step 1 from that guide is connect your iOS device to iTunes to import the song/sound you want to make a ring tone (DRM songs don't work so you can't buy a song to edit) ... doesn't look like it works without a desktop/laptop
songs Purchased through the iTunes store don't have DRM and can be selected. Songs you've added via an Apple Music subscription do have DRM and can't be selected

You can buy a song and download it to your phone / iPad without going near a computer
