iOS marking new email as read w/o having been read

When I get new mail on both my iPad and iPhone, it's automatically marked as read with me even opening it.

Its specifically with my gmail account that is set up with push on both devices.

Any thoughts to why this might happen? As you can imagine, it makes it difficult to know what I have and haven't looked at.

How would you handle it other than based on whether it was opened? The phone can't actually read your thoughts to see when it was read.

It's kind of the reverse problem that I have sometimes. Sometimes the email will be short enough that I can read it in the notification and I wish there were a way to mark it as such without actually opening it.

I think I may have confused you. Essentially, I get the email on my device and it is automatically shown as read. For instance, I will be sleeping and get email. When I wake up, it shows no new email, even though I haven't read them. I see the new messages, and but the show up as already have been read.

Basically I have no idea I have new email to look at because it doesn't show them as unread. This only happens on my gmail account though.

Check at the gmail site settings for any weird filters, although it seems you would know about that.

If it's POP, check the POP settings to see if the mail is being marked as read automatically.

Also, using iOS to handle a non-iCloud email is a chancy thing. Weirdness can happen at random - they aren't necessarily compatible. I had Gmail's email, contacts and calendar until iCloud email/contacts/calendar arrived. Suddenly, my contacts were a mess (duplicates, deletions, old data, etc), inability to delete Gmail, a blank calendar. When that last happened, I decided to shift all to iCloud and it's been fine ever since. Was a PITA, but worth the effort.

I started having this problem about two weeks ago. I could be looking at my inbox on another device and watch as some messages were marked as read. I thought it was my account being accessed but the records showed nothing weird.

Are you using Sparrow for iOS? Because I had it installed, but wasn't using it. I deleted it and never had the problem again.

An email protocol (POP, IMAP, ActiveSync, etc) is an email protocol. The server and client are certainly "compatible" if they follow the protocol being used.
