Imagine a Professional version of iOS. All the features currently lacking iOS 12 like Mouse/Trackpad support, External drive storage support, more customization. Do you think Apple would do it? What would you want to see added to iOS?

After thinking about it a while, everything to do with why I have not bought an iPad Pro this year seems to have to do with the limitations of iOS.

We need file management and an integration with OS X systems and external devices across networks.

I think that we might be headed a direction (eventually) where Mac OS starts to act more like iOS and iOS starts to act more like Mac OS, and we'll end up at the right place.

But we're not there, yet, and for the moment I can't see replacing a MacBook with an iPad Pro, as great as it is.

Hell, you can't even put a reasonable number of application icons on the home screen for goodness sake. :)

Out of curiosity, what is a reasonable number of aoplication icons on the home screen?

I think it's a good idea,
combine the touchscreen with a keyboard with trackpad, and make them attached to each other,
then you can move the battery and electronics under the keyboard, and make the screen thinner,
then give it an alternative OS, with file system, and....oh wait o_O

I had not thought a lot about all of this until this recent release and over and over hear reviews say the same thing. Not MacOS but not iOS either. Some place in the middle would be nice for me. No reduction in touch interface but would love to have multiple apps open in floating, windowed format similar to my Mac. Touchpad or mouse would be nice. Past that I don't know what I would need from Mac. I use each differently for different but also similar tasks.

Having a separate "Pro edition" would be stupid but I agree it would be nice to have proper support for more peripherals. They offer a keyboard that turns it into kind of a laptop but you still have to poke the screen which is a bit awkward in the keyboard attached orientation.

Just add support for mice via USB and Bluetooth as well as easy support for external drives so you can hook a drive via USB-C or Lightning and transfer files via the Files app.

Files also needs to allow arbitrary folders according to user preferences instead of grouping by app. Every app should be able to use a common UI for choosing the file to open from any folder in Files. This would give a central data storage instead of this ******** where each app has their own data storage and they don't necessarily communicate with each other. Apple has been trying to reinvent the wheel and now theirs is square shaped and not at all better than the previous version.

Split screen multitasking has to become a requirement. Just look at Google apps where it is supported seemingly randomly. Google Keep works with it, Google Maps and GMail (apps that would benefit from it more) don't. I should be able to split screen any app I please, both horizontally and vertically if I so choose. It should not be something a developer can just choose to not implement when most apps nowadays are made for both iPhone and iPad sizes.

Facetime and call screens need to be redone. They should not force you to answer, now you can't do anything if someone calls you until you answer or deny. On the iPad it would make more sense to have a sidebar or popup where the call can be answered instead of taking my whole 12.9" screen just for that.

Virtual keyboards need improvement. It's been years and my native language still has no prediction, nor do any other Nordic languages. Nearly every Android keyboard has this. I have to use Swiftkey (which is poorly optimized for 12.9" iPad Pro screen size) to type in my native language with prediction. Apple needs to allow access to stock prediction on custom keyboards so people can make different layouts if they don't like the stock one. Having to implement your own prediction system makes custom keyboards something only big companies with previous work can make reasonably.

External storage would be nice (although I personally wouldn't need it really), if you need mouse/trackpad support, get a MacBook and we need more Pro Apps for Pro Users.

If Apple does try ARM on Mac with MacBook or Air then they could move to a common code base. Apple would have better supply and integration of chips with their own ARM based systems.

Seemingly like Windows S, Home and Professional now. Microsoft wants to use Snapdragon in the Surface Go line but Intel sweetened their deal. But when the SD1000 comes out that likely changes.

I can do some of those things now with Note 8/9 and with DeX or even once 9.0 Pie is available on S9+ - mouse/keyboard and HDMI Also, Samsung us bringing back adaptable storage in 9.0 allowing for 512GB + extended storage, 8GB RAM (helps when in DeX mode).

If they would add all that I would replace my desktop with the new iPad Pro. My biggest gripe is not having mouse support. Leaning forward all the time to touch icons, click links, select items, etc... is not very intuitive/ergonomic, IMO.

I don’t think there is any incentive for Apple to bring out a pro iOS.

ideally they want you to have a home Mac (iMac, mini or Pro), Mac laptop, iPhone, iPad (and lots of dongles). Why improve the iPad at the detriment of the MacBook (Air/pro)?

... because holding back or crippling IPP sells laptops, AIO, mini and imac pro? it that an ARM based MacBbiM with long battery life and low heat yet no touch screen is what people want?

Apple only grudgingly sells or builds because it exists elsewhere and sees a market.

The Mac Pro died not due to lack of demand , but poor trash can reinvention was a workstation disaster that marketing hype couldn't fix and management no longer cared. Not the engineed feat it was suppose to be. Somewhat the same for the IBM Power G5. Maybe the Mac Pro was too good, too off the shelf upgradeable and could survive for years .Too successful as a workstation with upgradeability.

Even the XR looking doomed, projections down 30%?
