IOS Standby - Is this a bug or something else

So I just got a new iPhone 15 Pro Max and also order the Twelve South Deluxe 3 HiRise Charger.

When I put it on the charger in landscape mode at night it does a great job and immediately goes from locked screen to a standby screen.

However randomly during the night it will drop out of standby display and back to the lock screen. I then get the bong sound and it goes back to standby mode. This morning it happened once during the night and then twice around 6AM within about 10 minutes.

It's really random. I bought two of HiRise stands with one next to the bed and one by my office Mac Studio. I switched the stand first between locations to see if it was that and then I switched the power supplies. No real difference in behavior.

Before I resort to looking at other things like the power strip supplying AC to the HiRise I thought I would ask here to see if this is a known IOS problem. IE where does the problem lie with the HiRise or in the software or possibly the iPhone.

Exactly the same thing with my Belkin MagSafe charger and 15PM. And a friend of mine has the exact same issue with his iPhone 15 Pro and Belkin charger. Maybe anecdotal evidence only, but this issue just seems to exist with non-Apple MagSafe chargers.

I should add it do s not exhibit this behavior in portrait orientation. Only in standby mode which feels like an. Apple software issue.

Yes, same. It went on and off multiple times last night. Also, it normally does four of the charging bongs straight away when I first put it on the charger as well.

Whenever we’ve had something similar it was the position of the phone, or perhaps the weight of it, that was changing how strong the contact is with the actual charging surface. My current MagSafe charger, an ESR Halolock, has a very strong magnet so I’ve never encountered this.

I immediately thought the same as @papbot . Another possible factor: are you using a third-party case?

iPhone 15 Pro

I have a cheap third-party MagSafe clear case from Amazon. However, I have an authentic Apple MagSafe puck mounted in a stand, and it's plugged into an authentic Apple USB-C power-supply block (18-watt), and have had zero problems with Standby mode.

My guess is that your USB power supply is less than the minimum wattage required by the Belkin charger, whatever that is.

A couple years back when I got my first Qi charging puck, I plugged it into one the small cube Apple charging blocks (USB power supply). Since the wattage on the older Apple USB charging block was lower than the Qi charger required, it kept toggling in and out of charging mode, non-stop. A higher wattage USB charging block was put in place and fixed it.

I am using a Twelve South HiRise Deluxe 3 Charger which is brand new and sold on Apple's website so its recognized by them. The magnet is pretty strong. My case is a Mujjo Magsafe Compatible case.

As I mentioned I do not have this issue in portrait mode only in standby mode. It is very inconsistent. Sometimes it goes all night (and it fully charges) and then it complains a few times. It drops back to the lock screen and immediately into the standby screen. I will try it tonight without the case and see how it behaves.

But what about the power brick, AKA the power supply, AKA the USB or USB-C block that you plug your charger into? How many watts is it?

EDIT: I looked up your Twelve South HiRise Deluxe 3 Charger on the Apple Store site, and it shows that it comes with the power supply. Are you using the same power supply that it came with?

It was provided by Twelve South and not by me. It is 12v 3.0 amps = 36 watts
i have two of these units and have swapped the power supplies.

Yes. Then either you got a bad unit or their design is flawed. I would be disappointed too; that's an expensive charging system IMO.

When using an Apple power supply and Apple MagSafe puck, I have not seen the described issue at all, ever. Along with a super-cheap MagSafe bumper case and aluminum puck stand, it's been a perfect setup.

FYI, I removed the case and mounted it in nightstand orientation and just heard it do the charge bong as it dropped out of nightstand to lock mode and then back to nightstand mode. It had been sitting that way for a few hours.

So it’s not the case affecting it.

And you can prove it's not iOS related by trying an Apple MagSafe puck.

In my experience, when wireless charging is turning off/on repeatedly, it's the actual charger turning off/on repeatedly for whatever reason. Since you're using the correct power supply and it still has the problem without the case, I would return the entire charger and try a different one.

A $150 "luxury" charger should not be toggling off/on. There's a design flaw or you have a defective unit.

Mine has been doing this A LOT! So annoying. Seems random and increasing. I have the anker cube and a caseco case. I figured it was a software issue. Not sure why. But last night took my case off and never had the issue all night. Not sure if case blocks charge or anker is not strong enough.

Maybe related, I bought a Magsafe charger at the Apple store. When I put the phone on, it goes in Stanby mode and displays the clock. At some point during the night, the display will change from clock to one of my lock screen widget.

Nightstand mode is very (i.e. far too) sensitive to swipes so it is very very easy to accidentally switch the clock to a widget whilst putting it in on stand or if you wave at it during the night to illuminate the display.
Oddly the only time it is difficult to change is when you're trying to set it back to the clock!!

Nope, not a swipe. The phone is put on the stand and display the clock. I have a shortcut that refreshes the app at 0100. If I wake later, the widget is shown and the screen is not responsive to swipes. Undocking and re-docking shows the clock again.

The app is SweetDreams. In order to display data on the lock screen and the dynamic island, the feed must be refreshed at least every 8 hours. It can be done manually, or with a shortcut. I had it every 6 hours. To circumvent what has to be a bug in Standby, I now don't refresh overnight, and my first refresh of the day is when the phone is taken off charge.
