I've been using Apple products since years and still using MacBook Pro as main computer. I was using iPad 2 also before but didn't find useful while having a laptop so sold it. I'm working on a mobile application and already released for Android platform so I've been thinking about getting an iOS device but i would rather wait iPhone 7 (or whatever). My options now are iPod Touch 6 or iPad Mini 4 but maybe it will be better to use small screen device as the application is developed for phones. What do you suggest?

A very economical solution is to buy (used or refurb) the oldest iPod Touch that will run the latest iOS release. The buy/sell spread is small, to you won't be out much money if/when you need to trade up. And using an older device for testing will help prevent you from creating a slow and/or bloated app, or one that is right on the edge of being such.

My primary test devices for iOS developments are: iPad Mini 2 and iPhone 5 & 6. Forward compatibility is a non-issue so falling back an old device (that runs the latest OS) is a fantastic and cheaper solution. The only issue is when it comes to things like 3D Touch and features of the matter, but working to add those features in rather than hack them out is always the suggest solution
