For those who are interested, my netgear r7000 came with an interesting firmware update. That is, support for VPN on IOS devices.(also android and Linux)
Basically you enable the VPN on the router, download the certificates and sync them via iTunes. The open vpn connect app is required, which will import those certificates. My r7000 came with complete instructions, took about 10 minutes to fully get it working.
Tested out using cellular on my iPad and it works perfectly.
