iOS vs Android comparison

I feel like this is a pretty good comparison from an unbiased user so I thought I should post it here. It is certainly more detailed than any other post I have seen on the same subject.

I've frequently thought about trying out an Android phone just to see for myself how Google's OS compares to iOS. After reading in detail the article below, I feel like the author draws some clear conclusions that effectively resemble exactly what I would have come up with. I may still try an Android phone eventually in the future but for now I feel comfortable with this review:

I'm NOT trying to start any sort of inflammatory discussion but I would still like to hear what everyone else thinks about this article. If you agree or disagree please try to reference features/bugs or detailed personal experience to backup your post.

i actually read most if it and it wasn't "completely biased" at all.

i have an iphone, and for all apple does well, they are just as bad as leaving out incredibly simple things from their apps/OS.

disagree. i actually hate a lot of what apple does and every once in a while give the android OS a try. and every time, even though android does a lot of things very well, it doesn't quite have that it factor, that snappiness, that streamline feel of iOS. and that's more or less what the author was complaining about.

i don't understand why apple's camera app lags so far behind apps in their store (maybe so they can demo the cool new features during a keynote which are only new to their native app?) and i don't understand why you can't do simple things like add attachments while composing an email (seems like apple hasn't quite caught all the way up to windows 95 and netscape navigator 2.0 in that regard) but there is a lot positive to be said for apple's iOS/iPhone and a lot negative to be said for android.

actually i have. i tried the original droid when it was new. i preferred my 3G. i tried the Droid 2. i still preferred my 3G. i tried the Evo. i preferred the iPhone 4.

it hasn't been an issue with the phones themselves. the specs are fine, the keyboards are fine. the screens are fine. it's been with the operating system itself and the weak apps in market compared to what you see in the app store.

Weak apps? Every popular app in the app store has the same app in the android app store. Or an equivalent.

But it's not just about having an app with the same name by the same developer. Do all apps run with the same level of functionality and smoothness on both OS's? I think that's what the author of the article raised as an issue with the different OS's, isn't it?

No. Last time I checked, the netflix app ran faster on the GSII.

I didn't know about that so I'm glad you pointed it out. The GSII is definitely a great phone.

What about the majority of apps though?

Some are faster on the iPhone, some are faster on the GSII.

3D apps are not available for Android. Speedtest.net runs like butteon any iPhone, but has vertical tearing and lag and animation problems on any Android phone. Netflix is a web portal app. Etc.

There are android phones that are capable of 3D without glasses. HTC Evo 3D is one of them. There are plenty of apps that go with it.

I've had an Android phone for almost 2 years now (HTC Incredible). What made me decide to get one, and has kept me from switching to Iphone is the free turn-by-turn navigation App which is very good (plus my sense of direction really sucks). If Iphone had something similar, I would have switched awhile ago (I've got lots of Apps on Itunes for my Ipod Touch and Ipad).

From what I've read, the Iphone navigation apps available (willing to pay a one time fee, but not a monthly one) just aren't as good as the Google Nav App. I recently tried using just google maps, and it wasn't too bad; but I think I'd really miss that voice guiding me through the wilderness of suburban Washington, DC. Still thinking about switching though. The android OS fragmentation really bugs me, plus I have all those Apple apps. We'll see.

No offense to the OP, but these kinds of debates are like asking what was a better movie, Major League or Field of Dreams? Same target market, totally two different approaches with many overlapping themes.

Sorry if that is not the best analogy but I think it is really as simple as trying out both and seeing which is for you. And frankly, you should also include Windows in this discussion given the Mango update.

All three have their clear advantages but its not just about what they do well, but about what they do just ok, and then what they do piss poor and then what they don't do at all. The sum determines which you like best. A good friend had a Thunderbolt and loved it but he switched to a 4S. Why? He couldn't get his security program and two major business apps on any other platform. That for him was enough to switch.

I suggest you pick one up, test it, and go from there. Then let us know if the author in the article was right.

I think the article pretty much summarizes the way a lot of people have experienced Android in comparison to iOS. The author, I think, tried to be as open-minded as he could - while being honest.

I also read a (linked) counter point from a fellow who explains why he's sticking with Android. (Short answers: Gmail, replaceable battery, bigger screen, keyboard, and Google Voice.) All fair enough answers, but not particularly convincing to me.

In all fairness to the OP, this IS a perfectly valid question. Its like asking which is the better movie: The Godfather, or Godfather Part III? And we all know the answer to that one.
