Ever since I upgraded to iOS10 yesterday, my camera shutter will not open in the Camera app or on Instagram. It only seems to open on Snapchat.

Anyone else having this issue and a fix?

I'm also having trouble - if I launch camera in photo mode its like the shutter doesn't open. I can switch to a video mode and get the camera to open and then sometimes I can switch back to camera and take a picture, sometimes I can't. I'm going to investigate within other apps. I'm surprised there aren't more complaints about this out on the web. I'm on an iPhone 5s.

Same here. Has been happening on and off since upgrading my 6s Plus to iOS 10. A few days ago it happened 3-4 times in a couple hour timespan when I purposely wanted to take photos at an event. I didn't try switching to video and back, I've been restarting my phone every time it occurs in order to use the camera again.

I've had it open then blur and then I had to reboot. One time it opened up black and switching modes didn't return the picture. This was on iPhone 7 Plus. It happened on 10.0.2 but since I've went to 10.1 beta and I haven't had the issue yet. *crosses fingers*

I've had the blurring thing a handful of time- for me it's only happened after opening the camera by swiping left on the lock screen, though that could just be coincidence.

Rather than rebooting, try quitting the camera app in the multitasking view instead.

Happened to me once, that the Camera just remained black...
Doublepressing the home button and killing the camera app fixed it for me.

I've reported the same issue here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-7-camera-opens-to-black-screen.2004291/#post-23669249

Spoke with Apple and they haven't heard about this issue. They suggested the usual: hard reset, factory restore and if the issue continues to send the phone back for a replacement.

It seems to me that this is a software bug since users are experiencing the same thing when updating older iPhones, e.g. 5 and 6.

to apple... there aren't known issues whatsoever.. they have 2 "solutions" reset the phone or get a refurbished one. which none fixes anything..

I was hoping that iOS 10.1 would solve this once and for all, but I'm still occasionally having this camera issue, e.g. camera app opens and it has trouble focusing (yellow square comes on and off) and switching cameras doesn't help.

I haven't seen it on 10.1 on a 7+ yet. But I've seen it on a 6s on 10.x and never on 9.x.

I have this problem nearly all the time on each version of iOS 10 up to now 10.1. The quick fix for me is to swipe left to Video and right back again to Photo, then it works.

Wasn't this issue fixed and included in the release notes for 10.1?

nope. it happened again to me today. first time since the second day I owned the phone. a reboot got the shutter to work. its got to be a software issue. the iOS camera app opened to a black screen, however the focus grid appeared, but it seemed like the shutter won't open. closing the camera app didn't fix it. I immediately opened the 3rd party camera app ProCamera, and the shutter opened up immediately, without issue.

this must be an iOS bug, not a hardware issue.

Just submitted a bug report for this also btw

Try Reset All Settings. It's like a magic boost.
It shouldn't have to be. I don't want to nuke the field to kill a mouse.
[doublepost=1477681329][/doublepost]Just happened to me as well. I tried to open the camera app and got a very dark image and the camera kept trying to focus in and our over and over again.

Oddly enough, I switched over to Camera+ and it worked without issue. Definitely software and not hardware.

Instead of switching to a third party app you can just switch to Video mode and back to Photo and it works.

Nonetheless this is clearly an issue that needs to be resolved!

We weren't debating whether it should or shouldn't be necessary to do a Reset. Just trying to come up with a solution and this one works in the majority of cases. Unfortunately the reality is that software is buggy not just on iPhones.
I understand that. I've just grown weary of "reset your entire device from scratch" being the solution for every little iOS bug.

There are two options widely used: Reset all Settings (no data is erased) or Erase All Data (which wipes out the entire phone and returns everything to default settings). The first one is not as much trouble as the second one.

Yeah, thanks for the explanation, but I understand what each does. I'm simply stating that going through the hassle of wiping a phone is a lousy troubleshooting step for every tiny bug.

Odd because the release notes for iOS 10.1 say "Fixes an issue where opening the Camera app would show a blurred or flashing screen for some users". I had the issue on iOS 10 prior to iOS 10.1 but thankfully have not been having the issue since updating to iOS 10.1. :)

When all else fails, it's worth the hassle. And again, you're not wiping a phone. Just resetting the majority of the settings.

They also said 10.0.3 fixes the bad Verizon LTE reception issue. However people still have the issue here and there and even after updating to 10.0.3. So I take their "it's fixed" notes with a grain of salt.

I can confirm for myself anyway that 10.1 despite promising to fix the Camera app issue, it has not :(

My weekend will be spent doing an iTunes restore in recovery mode as outlined in my previous post.
