iPhone iOS10 to iOS8

Hi guys,

Long story short, I went to the Apple Store today because my iPhone 5 battery was swollen, causing the screen to pop out. I was offered by the Genius to get my phone replaced with a brand new iPhone 5 that runs iOS10 for the price of the battery ($79 plus tax). The caveat is, iOS10 will make the phone run slow (they won't install iOS8 on it).

My current iPhone 5 has iOS8 on it (yes I never update it in fear of my phone running slow).

If I went for paying for a new iPhone 5 with iOS10 installed on it, how do I downgrade it to iOS8?
 
No, it won't make your phone slow. iOS 10 runs fine on the iPhone 5 ... much better than iOS 9 did.

The Genius told me that iPhone 5 with iOS10 makes the phone runs slow. He told me that if I chose the iPhone SE over the iPhone 5, the speed difference is like night and day.

Should I believe him or nah?

He's trying to sell you an iPhone. I'm telling you from personal experience that it runs fine. Of course the SE will be faster ... it's essentially a 6S, which is a few years newer. If it wasn't, something would be wrong. Only you can determine if it's too slow for you or not. But iOS 10 is a lot smoother than iOS 9. It doesn't make the phone unbearably slow or something. $79 plus tax is a lot better than $400+.

Should I just pay up $79 plus tax and get a new iPhone 5 or should I just upgrade to a newer phone?

The reason I'm asking this is because I read through the forums that iPhone 5 is problematic.

I honestly absolutely love my SE and highly recommend it if you like phones this size. It's up to you. I'd personally go with the SE, was just trying to save you some coin. That and the SE should be good for at least a few years with how fast it is.
 
I just updated my wife's iPhone 5 to iOS 10 yesterday. I have yet to notice any 'slowness'.

The iPhone 5 is probably on his last iOS update and its a 2012 phone so paying $80 + tax for another one is a little pricey. I would place my money on a newer iPhone if I were you at this point.

Depends if he buy a phone on contract or not, but I rather buy a new phone who will last me for another 4 years than a phone that is mostly outdated now (iOS 10 will be the last iOS update for this phone) and the iPhone 5 is known for battery issue. I had one and the battery was very very bad just a year later.

What I ended up doing is that I just bought the iPhone 6s Plus because I wanted a bigger screen (got tired of looking at small text), faster speed, better camera, bigger battery, and memory space. At this point, I thought an upgrade would be better.

The battery problem on the iPhone 5 would probably occur again. I don't want to go through that hassle again.

IMO Take the replacement for $89. Good deal to have refurbished hardware that works. Even if it might be slower.

Idk how bad your battery is or if it did damage o other areas. But you could try to change the battery yourself.

You can also just get a newer iPhone. They will always be faster.

Is he offering the se for cheap?

Iphone 5 batteries has a known issue that Apple is fully aware of. I received a brand new 5s because of it then gave it to me nephew as I had already upgraded to the 6S. They were replacing them anyway about a year or so ago if not longer. I believe you made the best choice. Surprised they didn't offer you a free replacement.
 
Yep, best to get the newer phone as OP did. It just hurts for a little bit, but you'll be set for a lot longer.

Just don't upgrade to any new OS's in a hurry. Most times, the OS that comes with the phone is all you'll ever need.
