ios12, imessage, how to send photo??

Since upgrading to ios12 the option to select an existing photo to send is gone? I can still send a photo by going to my photo app and then clicking message, but from within imessage i can only send a new photo i can't attach one from my library? What am I missing?

iMessage app drawer -> Photos icon brings up the thumbnail view.
