I can’t find your specific query, but I found this on the Apple forum: “For iOS 14 you need iTunes 12.8.2.3 or better running on OS X 10.11.6 or better. I think the same limitations apply to iOS 15.”
So you need El Cap at least. Maybe somebody can clarify further, sorry.
It would be helpful to know the version of macOS you are using.
In case you are running a newer version of macOS: The latest iTunes version of Mojave is 12.9.5.5 from 2019 which can also be (unofficially) installed via Retroactive on Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura.
But completely independent of iTunes, when you connect an iOS device to your Mac on said OS versions, you are prompted to install a "Device Support Update" which is basically a driver for macOS to work with the most recent iOS version.

Thanks, looks like iTunes 12.8.2 is what would be needed.
Many Macs and iOS devices in our office.
As to Mac OSX: Snow Leopard, Mavericks, ElCap, Sierra
Thanks for posting this info. I like to update my phone using iTunes and my computer runs High Sierra. Was worried about not having the computer recognize my phone after updating to iOS16
