First thing I noticed when I installed iOS5.1 was this bug, and others have noticed it too, I know the Apple apologists will deny its existence but here is what everyone is experiencing -

- Put two fingers on screen
- Slowly pinch to zoom
- Notice that it now takes about 0.5cm of movement before it starts to zoom

This never happened previously, in fact I have my girlfriends iPhone here and hers zooms instantly upon first movement

What gives?

You can try it yourself in Safari/Photos

In b4 "hurr durr do a restore" etc, we've already tried that

Not a problem on my iPad on iOS 5.1 with either Safari or Photos. You say "everyone" is experiencing this but your girlfriends iPhone is not?

The delay factor must be a result of moving fingers very slowly as soon as you touch the screen. If you put your fingers on the screen and wait 1/3 second, then spread them slowly, it's instantaneous.

Nope, still slow.

I have my girlfriends iOS5.01 iPhone 4 here and my iOS5.1 iPhone 4 and they are very different in the sensitivity.

This is what happens to me.

Never noticed it before and never bugged me in the slightest. I really would imagine they would include the delay to make sure you don't accidently zoom in the moment another finger etc touches the screen.

Bump, still happens in 5.1.1

Tested it with 2 different iPhones, both DFU restored and set up as new.

Pinch zooming works fine if you press fingers against screen quite heavily, but light touches are missed or take a few milliseconds to respond.

Results in random cases where you go to zoom in or out and it barely moves at all... and precise zooming can be a pain.

Downgraded back to 5.0.1 and works flawlessly like it has done for the last few years

Good catch, I definately experience this on my 4s. I unconciously noticed it but didnt really think about it much. Now that I try you method though it is very obvious.

It happens on mine too... but I don't have a problem with it. I had resized items by accident in the past, and now that I'm thinking about it I haven't had that issue recently.

I'm a 5.1 Jailbroken device and I only "notice" (only because you brought it up so I tested it, would had never noticed or cared [I still don't really] if you wouldn't had said anything, lol) it if I go and pinch to zoom as soon as I touch the screen. If I touch the screen for about half a sec, it doesn't really do it.

maybe it's not really a bug and it's there to keep you from re-sizing stuff so easily? Just a little thought.

Same here, I kept thinking "why hasn't my iPhone zoomed as far as I expected", I suppose you get used to a very predictable level of zooming.

It happens on mine too... but I don't have a problem with it. I had resized items by accident in the past, and now that I'm thinking about it I haven't had that issue recently.

But it wasn't documented as a change to make it so you don't accidently zoom, therefore I consider it a bug. If they were to change something after all these years I would expect something in the update notes.

As above, I'd have expected update notes if it was a genuine change. Maybe it depends on how you use your fingers to zoom, for me it really bugged me... upgraded to 5.1 then downgraded, then tried out 5.1.1 and downgraded again. Looks like maybe stuck on 5.0.1 for a long while now

Possibly explanation as I saw on the official Apple forums is the new iPad 3 resolution, maybe some figures for zooming were changed for the iPad 3 due to the resolution change (eg, once your fingers move x pixels start to zoom, so a higher level of pixels before zooming is instant on the iPad 3 but takes a little while on a lower resolution) which seems like a possible explanation, but who knows

sorry i wasn't going to comment on this thread, but if you are seriously not wanting to update your phone until they release notes that say "photos zoom the instant you pinch" i have a feeling you are going to be waiting a long time.

That's a bit ridiculous

In my opinion, the lag is so they can determine if you are really pinching or spreading or moving left or right.

Go ahead try it, it has the same "lag" if you move left or right too.

My reason to not update is because it is annoying, and a change from how it has been since the iPhone was released.

I don't understand you, you're not the least bit bothered Apple changes something without saying? To me, if this was deliberate, it is something they would put into the release notes

There IS a delay. Ashin is right. I never noticed before. I bet it's designed to prevent constantly pinch zooming too easily.

It's all well and good justifying the change, but if it isn't a bug and is really intended... I think we should have been told, and be given an option to disable it.

How about General> Accessibility >Accidental zooming/scrolling protection - On or Off

I am experiencing the same thing. I thought it was imaginary... and that it was always there.

I have noticed the same thing and it is annoying as hell!

Glad more people notice it.

I couldn't quite figure out the problem when it wasn't zooming in as far as I had expected it to, or even not at all... but I knew for sure it was a problem in iOS5.1 since it never occurred this frequently before.

I suppose some people are either just not very aware of these little things, or assume it is something they are doing wrong

This is exactly the same bug that I also first noticed after upgrading my iPhone 4 to 5.1.1. It is soooooo annoying - it is like this iOS is slower than the previous versions:(
The revolutionary thing about iOS is that it responds to the user input immediately - that is why it is the best and this bug breaks this feature.

I noticed it first in Safari, then in "maps" app. Besides the delay - the zooming is now much slower than before.

My girlfriend has got the same bug in her iPhone 3GS.

Ashin - please report this bug to the apple - it has to be fixed ASAP.

I agree. I have reported the bug and I am asking everybody who is annoyed by this to do the same thing. It might help.

instead of fighting here, you should have sent a report a long time ago if this is truly a bug.

Still happens.

Luckily I am still using 5.0.1 though ;)
