brilliant, installed ios5, and after half an hour safari, itunes and apps store have dissapeared from the phone. Also I'm locked out of apps on itunes on my laptop from making changes to them. Any suggestions?

Most likely, restrictions (the equivalent of Parental Controls) has been enabled. Go to Settings->General->Restrictions and make sure that the sliders are all in the On position.
Cheers, it was the restrictions. Don't know how that happened, I've never looked at them in my life.
