I consider myself a reasonably intelligent guy, but the one thing that has baffled me all these years is the sync process through iTunes. No matter how hard I try, I just can't understand it. So, predictably, my three iOS5 upgrades did not go as seamlessly as I suppose they have for everyone else...
Device 1: Gen 1 iPad: Synced iPad before upgrading. Sync kept my apps, but destroyed my folders. Subsequent upgrade to iOS5 and restore from backup did not restore the folders, so I needed to recreate them. Frustration Level: MILD
Device 2: iPhone 4: Did not sync before upgrading. iOS5 upgrade removed all the apps and folders, and the restore from backup did nothing to bring them back. All apps... everything... gone. Went to restore it again and discovered that the backup was from September 26th, despite iTunes backing up the phone right before the iOS5 upgrade. Frustration Level: HIGH
Device 3: iPhone 4: This time I synced ahead of time. Just like with the iPad, the sync kept the apps but destroyed the folders. The upgrade to iOS5 and subsequent restore worked fine, though the folders were still lost. Frustration Level: MILD
CONCLUSION: I lost my folders on all three devices, and the backup of one of my iPhones was apparently not saved. I guess I just don't get it... why can't these upgrades and syncs just assume that what's on my phone/iPad NOW is what I want after?
Like I said, I just don't get it.
