I probably only would have updated if I had a iP5. anything below that would have turned into an iPod for my truck.

Give it a while. It's probably indexing and that takes ages.

on my ipadAir2 similar effect occurred. After 30 minutes it was fine and not that laggy anymore. also enable batterysaving mode to see if there are any changes related to speed. GoTo Settings - Battery; enable "Low Power Mode". After following this video I am still not convinced installing ios9 on my iphone 4s :(

The iPhone 4S is FOUR YEARS OLD. Most modern computers you replace every 3-4 years because there's no way in hell it will keep up with modern innovations. A phone is no different.

If you can't figure out the fact that your LONG overdue for an upgrade, go ahead and switch to Android. Then tell us how you like not being able to update your OS at all when new .0 versions come out.

The problem is that Apple does not provide security updates for previous OS versions.

Any recent version of iOS is way more secure than Android (and even there, if you know what you're doing shouldn't be a major issue).

I use iOS 6 on my iPod and never had security issues, and this was released in 2012.

I'm just going to say this:
I've been using iOS 9 on my 5c since June 8th when it was released at WWDC. It has evolved (A LOT) since beta 1. As many have said, indexing is a major part of iOS, and with a new X.0 release, that takes time. Performance will suck for a while, and no, there's no exact estimate of when it will get better. On order for a proactive assistant to work, it requires mining (in a good way) through all your data to provide relevant information in the future.

I get it, Apple says "it just works", but give it time.

LOL are you ******** me? The phone is 4 generations old now- 5, 5S, 6, 6S
Sometimes I wish Apple would cut off support for all devices except the current generation and offer no customer service for previous generations. Then people will see what "no support or security upgrades" really is.

Just downloaded this to my 4S and it's a disgrace. It takes 4 seconds to open any app - photos, music. It makes 8 look lightning fast. I thought that they promised a better performance on older phones? Sincerely shocked and disappointed. What a load of crap.

Downgrade while you can. I'm not joking. I had a 3G with iOS 4. I wanted to throw that thing against the wall.

I genuinely wish Apple made some kind of user-accessible EFI in their iPhones so that advanced people who know what they're doing could actually downgrade if needed.

Are you serious that you replace a computer every 3 or 4 years???? Damn, when I pay £1300 for a MacBook Pro, I expect it to last 5 or 6 upwards!!! Maybe an iPad but come on :)

These things should last. They are £600-£700 items in the UK not some £50 thing! Also I use the video output on the 30pin. Had the lightning connector supported that for older TVs I may of upgraded. But I like the 4S and a lot of people still do!
