After the launch of Swift Playground, what do you guys think about future Xcode platform in Pro versions of iPads? Is it possible?

Since the current Swift Playground actually supports most of the iOS dev libraries, why not soon?
I'm not really basing it on anything except a feeling that we will see it earliest with iOS 11 but don't think it would be until iOS 12 is released.

  • I really think Xcode is a viable future for the iPad Pro, and that it'll be a good direction to take. That way, you involve more developers in the platform, whilst expanding the user base.

Honestly, swift playgrounds was a massive surprise when I saw it released. I've been a developer for years and never saw Apple moving in that direction. Now in terms of Xcode, anyone who's spent time using interface builder knows it's far from usable on a touch screen. If Apple plans to make a full IDE available on iOS, I could see them doing it incrementally, like adding support for commandline programs in iOS 11 and slowly adding more features. Next 1-2 years? No way. 5 years is a good possibility though. It all depends on what we see them do with swift playgrounds in the future

You won't see Xcode on tablets until they (potentially) merge macOS and iOS which isn't likely to happen anytime soon, mostly because tables just don't have the memory capacity.

Xcode contains a heck of a lot - Xcode in iOS is kind of asking for a faster horse.
Maybe subcomponents? Under the umbrella Xcode you have documentation, all the device simulators. Debugger? Bot creator? Some bits make sense, some don't whilst being on iOS. But what has been shown for Playgrounds looks great for v1.0

Not necessarily. Definitely not a fully functioning Xcode on iOS which is probably what you were thinking of, but I do see them slowing adding more features to bring that capability to the iPad.

iPad pros do have enough memory, isnt it?
