I just noticed that the Des Moines, Iowa Apple Store opening was announced yesterday on www.MacMinute.com !!! It's scheduled to open on Saturday, November 6th @ 10:00 am (I checked the Jordan Creek website), but I'll not be able to be there because I'll have my youth group at a retreat IN Des Moines.

So, is anyone planning on going to the opening? I'm not sure if it will be a big event or just an opening. I will go as soon as possible though so I can check out the Photo iPods.

I won't be there but that'll probably be the place where I purchase my next Mac... and take the occasional trip to... because ummm... I hear it's a nice mall... ;)

Yeah, it's a big mall. But I really wasn't that impressed. Although my lack of enthusiasim may be related to the fact that last time I was there the Apple Store wasn't open. Besides, aren't you from around Iowa City (I'm guessing because I say the Beautiful Feet thing in your sig once)? The Coralville Mall has many of the same stores unless you are looking to spend a lot of money, then Jordan Creek is the stores!

But! There is no Apple store in Coral Ridge Mall... :)

Hmmmm... Nov 6th... 10 am... 1 1/2 hour drive... hrmmmm..... hrrrrmmmmm.... the panda just might be there. I have family that lives in Des Moines I could probably stay with Friday night anyhow... hrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

I'm tempted... broke and tempted... :)

If I am not there I better have a good excuse why cause I live about 20 mins away. Should be awesome. Iowa is in need of a good Apple retailer. Relying on CompUSA has been very hard. I can't wait! Hopefully they have the new photo iPods at the opening.

Like I said, I doubt I will be there because of my job (darn youth event...gotta love them). But, I guess I probably won't miss much except the free t-shirt (man I really wanted one!!). I can go see it first thing Monday morning...besides that I may know if I get a coaching job for a little extra side money by then...hmmm...the end of soccer season could bring a new iBook!!! ;)

But you'll miss the free t-shirt!!!!!!! If I get the free t-shirt can I stop by your place and mock you as I wear it?

considering i live... oh, a couple of miles from it... yeah, i'll be going :) still a little (ok, a LOT) disappointed that i didn't get so much as a callback on my resume, i was really hoping to get a job there. oh well. Frigging finally, i can stop bitching about how far the nearest apple store is!

Ahhhhhh....I don't want to miss the free t-shirt!!!! Hmmm...time to formulate a plan. Okay, must go to Yahoo Maps and figure out where I'm going to be in relation to Apple Store...Hmmm, it appears that I'll be in the middle of the town at the Embassy Suites or maybe a little closer at Hoover High School. Well, youth will be involved in activities all morning (ping-pong, basketball, etc...) so maybe I could sneak out when nobody is looking and get there!!! But, I guess if they see me leave or find out I ditched to go to the mall a group of highschoolers (including a gaggle of girls) may get upset. I guess it's final...no free t-shirt for me :( You all better wear yours with pride!!!

Mall.... gaggle of girls... c'mon. I don't think anybody has to point out the solution to you.

Maybe we should all wear name tags while we're in line.

Question is.... should I bring my iBook G4 or my Newton eMate 300?

According to the page on the Apple site for the Jordan Creek Store there will be T-Shirts given to the 1st 1,000.

Anybody hear anything about lucky bags or whatever they are?

I don't know for sure, but I think they announce the bags if they are going to have them so I would doubt that they are selling them. Of course, this will be a good time to check out the Photo iPod!!!

On a side note. Do you believe that CompUSA will continue to sell macs after the Apple Store opens. They are both sort of on the same side of town and the Apple Store will get updates way before CompUSA. It seems like CompUSA is usually behind about 2 or 3 weeks after an update. For example I was there last night and they still had the old iBooks and were selling them for the old price still! I hope they don't get very much uninformed walk in purchases until they get the new iBooks...I would feel bad for that person!

CompUSA seems to still sell Macs in just about every town where there's an Apple Store. Here in Illinois every CompUSA near an Apple Store does. Wish I could make it to the DSM opening - my mother and stepdad live there - I'd go if they weren't coming here for Thanksgiving.

On a totally unrelated subject (damn, I do this a lot) how do you like living in Chicago. I've been spening more time there as of late, and am trying to persuade my girlfriend to move there with me. How's the job market (specifically tech sector) and what about housing? I've got a 2001 built 2 bedroom apartment in Cedar Rapids for $645 a month, do you think something would be comparable in Chicago?

I'll try to keep this short. I absolutly love living here in Chicago. The summers by the lake are fantastic, the city itself has tons of stuff to do for people of all ages. Concerts, plays, movies in the park, festivals, literally thousands of restaurants, etc. I could go on and on for pages about the benefits (and some drawbacks) of this city. Get out of Cedar Rapids – I’ve been there many a time and that distillery wheaty foot smell in the air alone would drive me crazy. My wife and I just bought a condo downtown – kinda pricey but rental apartments are cheap depending on the neighborhood you want to live in. I’ve lived in Edgeqater, Uptown, Bucktown, East Village, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park. From edgy, sketchy neighborhoods to places that are totally safe with everything you could ever want at your doorstep. Cheapest relatively safe neighborhood is Humbolt Park– close to and slowly becoming hipsterville – our last apt. was a 3 bedroom 2000+ sf apartment in a vintage greystone building was $800/month. Wicker Park would be 9-1,200 for that – closer to action though. The closer you get to the lake rents go up. Pay rates on the whole can be higher depending on the type of work you do. Anyway, I don’t want to hijack this thread with a conversation about Chicago – PM me with whatever questions you may have.

Back to the Apple Store Opening...

I saw an article in the Des Moines Register this morning talking about new store. The had a picture of a cluster of eMacs in the store and they interviewed someone from Apple and someone from the Des Moines Mac Users Group. The article said that they would open the North (I think) mall doors at 7:00 am for the expected lines. The store is scheduled to open at 10:00 and they are expecting quite the crowd!!! Alas, I won't be there and I'm so busy I'm not sure when I will be there.

I hope we get some reports from those that attend...and maybe some pictures?

That's very nice to know... I was going to show up after 10 because I though we'd have to wait outside until the mall actually opened at 10 and I can't particularly be outside for 3 or 4 hours...

Yes, i'll be getting there at the butt-crack of dawn now. I was going to leave CR at 8 but I'll have to push that back a couple hours now.

sgarringer - I almost forgot one of the best things about Chicago... 4 Apple Stores in the city and burbs with more to come! The flagship store on Michigan Ave. is amazing. Welcome to the club Iowa - this finally gives me something to go back there for! Please take pics people.

Leaving at 8am on Saturday from CR to get to the Apple Store? Are you nuts? I'm leaving at 4pm Friday! :)

I won tickets to Black Eyed Peas; for some reason they always remind me of my iPod, donno why. So I'll be there tonight, then getting drunk after that, then waking up at 4AM to drive to Des Moines.

Ouch. Can we say hangover?

I'll bring my camera and take some photos for everyone to enjoy.

aricher - I drove by Michegan Ave store, couldnt find anywhere to park. It looked awesome and busy as hell. I love downtown Chicago, its not like other downtowns I've been in. And it seems like they're doing a lot of work on it, cleaning stuff up and the like....

Plus I like not benig hassled on almost every corner for money.
