My iPad 1 is very slow now with IOS5. It lags really bad almost all the time, even with no other apps open. All it gets used for anymore are simple games for my daughter (5-1/2yo), but even still, it's just slow. I wish I could go back to IOS4.

Anybody else notice this?

I have iOS 5 on an iPad 1, and although many apps do seem to crash a lot, I don't think it has slowed down at all from the day I bought it.

no problems on mine, safari crashes a bit but thats the only problem, and I think that is more safari than ios5.

Mine seemed the same speed as normal but safari crashed more than a little. Then I did a restore as new and that fixed safari. In comparison to the ipad2 or 4s it is slower but it doesn't seem to be different than what it was on 3.x or 4.x.

My two issues have been: 1.) lagging when typing and 2.) apps crashing a lot. However, since we got my one son an iPad 2 and the other an iPod Touch, I will be removing most of the games and educational apps I had loaded on mine specifically for them.

I also have greatly reduced the number of songs loaded on my iPad since I have subscribed to iTunes Match.

I have not checked recently, but I think about 1/3 of my 64GB is apps right now.

Mine seems a little less snappy than it was under 4.x, but not terribly so. It tends to have trouble loading some huge games like Need for Speed these days, but other than that it seems well enough.

ipad IOS 5

I have the 64gb 3g capable one and when I updated it to IOS 5 it became a little glitchy but for the most part it is fine.:apple:

After reading a bunch of these "iPad 1 is sooo slow on iOS 5, OMGz!" threads - I was afraid to put it on my iPad. But, I read replies that said "set it up as new and not from a backup".

If you setup your iPad as new (start from factory settings with no 3rd party apps, no music, no videos), it will run fine. Typing is fine & apps load in the same times (maybe a tad bit slower).

The only problem I've read about & found to be true is that Safari crashes (a lot). Out of browsing on standard tech sites (MacRumors, Gizmodo, BGR), it crashed twice in an hour.

Yup, had the same issue. Sold it and got the iPad 2. Unfortunately, the iPad 1 is quite old and isn't specifically suited for every iOS5 task. I'm sure the iPad 2 will behave the same way when iOS 6 or 7 will come out. It is the way technology works, as new software is released, older hardware has a hard time supporting it.

Weird, I've had no problems at all. Even utilizing some of the more intensive ios5 features like wi-fi sync, imessage, etc have all been surprisingly good for my 2+ year old iPad

Thanks for the help, everybody. I just started the restore now. So when it's done, I can just Sync with iTunes and let it bring my apps and music back down, as opposed to restoring the backup?

I just want to be sure. When stuff is too simple, I get confused. :)

The only slowness I have observed is at the opening lock screen. I just wait an extra second or two to slide the bar and from then on it it fine.
