Typical stock shortage. I wouldn’t try and read too much into two store being out of stock at the beginning of the school year.
Figured it could be the case. the 10.2" did only come out a year ago (sept 2019)

Its still in stock on Apple's website, so probably just a shortage like you said.
The 128GB silver ($423) and space gray ($429.99) are still in stock on Amazon; the gold will be in stock on 8/23.
